He Married the Wealthiest Woman in the Province

And She Became a Revolutionary

Carolina was originally chartered by Charles II the king of England. It was overseen by eight Lord Proprietors.

A large grant was issued for lands South of Virginia and North of Spanish lands of Florida which extended from the Atlantic coast to the Mississippi River.

The seaport of Edenton became the Provincial capital before the land was divided into three separate states of North and South Carolina and Tennessee.

Penelope Padgett Craven, a young widow at 28 was the wealthiest woman in the province when she married attorney Thomas Barker who helped manage their vast estates. Penelope Barker became a revolutionary in 1774 while Thomas was overseas attending to business in England.

In provincial America women were generally excluded from political matters but becominng inspired by the 1773 Boston Tea Party ten months earlier Penelope Barker and 50 other prominent ladies of Edenton sent a signed declaration of protest to the London papers where they were mocked and ridiculed with cartoon images of evil women meddling out of their expected roles.

This was of course one of the earliest notable protests of the American colonies innitiated by women. But with their roles in managing the home and majority of purchases they were in controlling positions for any boycott activity.

All this time Thomas Barker became stranded exiled in England due to British embargoes of the colonies. With the outbreak of the revolution he was not allowed to return the North Carolina for four more years when the revolution had ended. Through it all came a happy ending.

By signing their names to the declaration against purchasing  any product sent from England the ladies of Edenton said they were braver than the men of Boston since they were open, public, non-violent and not in disguise.

Products produced in the colonies were cotton, tobacco, hemp, naval stores (tar, pitch, lumber and turpentine). Edenton was also known for brassworks and founderies producing bells and cannon.

Edenton NC Tea Party October 25, 1774

The Barker House now sitting on the waterfront is the official visitors center in Edenton, NC. and is open for vistors without charge seven days a week. A monument stands on the walking tour at the place where the Edenton Tea Party was hosted.

In all of the colonies hemp was a major agricultural product giving resources for paper, canvass, ship sails, medication and woven fabric for clothing. The original copy of the Declaration of Independence was written on hemp.

Today products from hemp continue to expand into hemp-crete for building homes and non-narcotic CBD oil with many therapeutic uses.

After nearly five years of marketing the CTFO health, diet and nutritionals CTFO has developed and introduced 21 new CBD products useful for reducing blood sugar level, anti-inflamation pain, muscle spasms, seizures and promoting bone strength.

These are non-narcotic alternatives to medical cannabis and legal for all states. Our latest formulas are safe for zero tolerance in drug testing situations.

We still offer free money-making positions and many other products that are not CBD related.  No purchase is required to earn weekly commissions.
