On December 8th, 1980, I was watching Monday night football. Howard Cosell was the announcer. As I recall, after a short pause he came on and announced that John Lennon had been shot and pronounced dead just minutes before. I was crushed. This man had taken me through my teens and into my twenties, through the death of loved ones and through the weirdness of trying to be a square peg in a round hole. Death happens.
The years I’ve spent working from home have given me time to reflect on what I’ve learned from those experiences. Mr. Lennon spoke and sometimes wrote from his core. Sometimes that tends to impart unintentional brilliance. When you work from home it can be lonely. Since the odds are against your succeeding there can also be a lot of frustration. One of Mr. Lennon’s sets of lyrics applies rather neatly to this situation and truly helped me make sense of it. It’s in the lyrics to, “All You Need Is Love”.
The words clearly aren’t projected at our work from home situation but they relate well to the honesty needed to simply survive the experience. “There’s nothing you can do that can’t be done, Nothing you can sing that can’t be sung. Nothing you can say but you can learn how to play the game, It’s easy”. He was clearly speaking a reality that everyone knows is fact. He was however, saying more in that lyric than “All You Need Is Love”.
He was saying , Look, its okay. Every mistake you make, needs to be made. Every frustration you feel needs to be felt. All these things that have you on the edge of giving up or freaking out need to be there and be experienced by you in order for you to find success. “There’s nothing you can make that can’t be made, No one you can save that can’t be saved, Nothing you can do but you can learn how to be you in time, It’s easy”.
He was saying, Look, this is your reality, the way it has to be. Embrace it, its how it is and should be. “There’s nothing you can know that isn’t known, Nothing you can see that isn’t shown, Nowhere you can be that isn’t where you’re meant to be, It’s easy”. (and by the way…) “All You Need Is Love”. Thanks John, we needed that.
