A Happy Place

Do you live in a happy place?

There’s a new article in National Geographic that discusses the happiest places to live in America.

I am always intrigued by what writers and researchers deem as happy. Isn’t it intrinsic? Is happiness something (that really happens) on the outside of us? What is it that they say that creates happy environments? What would a place have to have or be to embody happiness?

Some scientists look for the roots of happiness which include location-specific qualities of place (I am interpreting this as the land and the way that man interacts with the terrain), a sense of community, and opportunity——these are the ideas that can can powerfully inform one’s quality of life.

Time for some exploration, let's start with the Top 3:

The top honor went to Boulder Colorado; let’s see why…

1) Walkable —More people walk to work than in any other city.

2) Bike-able —Over 300 miles of bikeways. Most natives believe that the best way to see Boulder is by bike.

3) Low rates of Smoking and Obesity (high rates of exercise) “Boulderites see themselves as active and productive everyday.”

Next, in line is Santa Cruz, California, which is known for its stunning and staggering landscape, which includes :

-the Boardwalk

-incredible Beaches

-breath-taking Mountains

-a diversity of Cultures infused by a college town atmosphere

Ahhhh, all of the above sound great for me....I think I should also point out that this little California Dreaming beauty is also one of the most expensive places to live.......

Lastly (and for the sake of the brevity of this post) is Charlottesville, Virginia. It’s interesting that this city made the list, considering the shockingly tragic events that have left a bruise on this college town.

Three years ago, Charlottesville was not only called the happiest city, but also “Joy Town” because of its “sophisticated cultural resources, good food and comprehensive public health facilities.” It is also a relatively small (college) town that is surrounded by an incredible countryside. It is also (just happens) to be a few miles away from that Founding Father’s estate who continues to press us to believe in Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.

Just perusing the list of the top 3, there are a few things that stand out to me.

#1: Nature is important to us. Most of us crave it and many try to spend as much time in it as we possibly can (myself included). It really feeds and nourishes our souls.

#2: We want to live active lives, whether we’re hiking, biking, or walking. We want to move our bodies and we want to have fun!

#3: Learning is fun and we take joy in continuing to feed our brains, no matter how old we get.
