Learning how to breathe properly, particularly while exercising, will help you focus on your muscles and your body while burning fat at the same time.  As we inhale, the oxygen goes to our lungs and then into our bloodstreams.  Exhaling, carbon dioxide leaves our body and is put back into the air.  Chest breathing (shallow breaths) hinders our body's ability to release enough carbon dioxide, and all that stored carbon dioxide in our bodies cause a real problem with cell metabolization, brain function, and weight gain.  Shallow breathing also prevents your body from getting enough oxygen, which leaves you at risk for heart attacks, cancer, strokes, and other diseases and will eventually lead to muscle atrophy and exercise intolerance.

If we pay close attention to our breathing, both in exercise and in everyday life, we can garner huge benefits for our bodies.  One of the best ways to begin that awareness is to practice deep breathing.  Deep breathing is one of the most beneficial exercises we can do for our bodies.  Yes, deep breathing is exercise!  As we breathe deeply from our diaphragm, the muscles of our abdominals and intestines are massaged and strengthened.  Bringing awareness to our breath nourishes every cell in our body.  One of the many wonderful facts, and best-kept secrets about deep breathing it that it naturally increases our metabolism.  When we increase the oxygen in our cells, our metabolism kicks into high gear and we become more energized.  And, of course, jumpstarting our metabolism will help us lose weight if necessary or maintain healthy body weight.

Deep breathing also promotes circulation and helps our lymphatic system work more efficiently.  Every cell in our body is surrounded by a fluid called lymph, and our lymphatic system works as a sewage system by removing dead cells, blood proteins, and other toxic materials.  Conscious breathing detoxifies our bodies and renews our minds and spirits.
