The Trouble With Traffic Exchanges

Traffic Exchange

I must admit to a healthy facination with traffic exchanges for over a decade now. They got me my start in online marketing, and have learned to appreciate their services.

But there is one big elephant in the room:

Do traffic exchanges still work?

This is the most frequently asked question about these platforms. And the answer is yes...depending upon how you use it.

I know many will say that exchanges just don't produce the results that they once did. was alot easier 10 years ago. However, ask yourself this question:

If traffic exchanges don't work, then why are they still around and still growing? The answer: because somewhere along the line, somebody is making money.

Here a rule to live by if you choose to use these advertising services:

  • If you are an upgraded member who purchases ad credits, then you are the one doing the selling.
  • If you are a free member surfing for credits, then you are the one being sold to.

That's the stone cold truth!

Traffic exchanges have been around since the advent of the internet, but my first experience with them was just over a decade ago. I was a member of all the major players at the time.

Easy Online Sales

It was remarkably easy to gain referrals and sales (even as a free member). The online marketing industry was still fairly new and fresh. People were just beginning to discover the potential of making money online from home - and they were willing to open their wallets to pretty much anything with a decent 'hook'.

Remember...At the time, landing and opt-in pages were still rare - they were just getting developed and recognized.

Fast forward to today and things have changed dramatically. Surfers have become acutely aware of all the fly-by-night programs, opt-in traps, and scams. Does any remember "Just Been Paid"? Ya, it burned alot of people. (Remarkably, it's little brother ACX seems to still be running after all this time.)

Tracking Is Mandatory

If your not using a tracker with traffic exchanges, then I can guarantee that you will waste your time and money. All exchanges are not created equal - results vary, and you need to be aware of what works and what doesn't.

If you are not willing to spend the $20 a month on a tracker, then you don't belong on these platforms. Keeping your fingers crossed and hoping for the best will get you nowhere.

Personally, I use Leadsleap for my traffic exchange tracking, primarily because it lets me gauge what type of interaction my landing pages get. You can read my mini-review here.

My Strategy

Stop Wasting Time

There many tips and tricks out there, including specialized browsers, which help you surf 10, 20, or even 50 sites at the same time.

That's absurd and outrageous!

I would recommend getting very good at utilizing one traffic exchange at a time, learning to dominate each before adding another to the mix.

I choose exchanges based upon the number of active members and the level of participation encouraged on each site. For example, most of the top platforms have some sort of social aspect, or otherwise gamify the surfing experience in order to engage their audience.

Yes, profiles do matter!

Remember...your selling yourself too, not just a product or service.

My number one, go to, traffic exchange at the moment is Traffic Ad Bar. (I will be releasing a complete review shortly.) This decision is completely based on my tracking results...and nothing else.

When I first got started with Traffic Ad Bar, my first objective was to learn every aspect of how it worked - from building a simple profile, to moving up the level ranks. I looked at every page, FAQ, support forum, and review to get everything I could on the site. Then I invested time following and watching the 'top dogs' on the platform to understand what got them to that level.

Then I upgraded and ran with it.

I have since done the same with several others traffic exchanges.

Stay Active

Traffic Ad Bar

Upgrading in any traffic exchange will almost always give you the benefits of increased views and exposure without having to invest all that time surfing. However, I highly recommend to stay active and participate daily on each site you decide to join.

The reason? Staying active allows you to follow the trends and the people that come and go. To stay up to date on any changes to the platform and industry. Ask yourself these questions:

  • What is the current 'hot program of the month'?
  • Who are the leaders driving the most traffic?
  • How are these leaders converting that traffic into sales?
  • What landing pages are working? Which ones aren't?

If you can't answer any of the above, then I suggest you invest more time doing so before adding or moving on to another exchange.

In Conclusion

Traffic exchanges are not the holy grail of easy traffic that they seem to be. Like any other advertising platform, it takes time (and money) to learn how to utilize the service effectively, and for profit.

Do your homework. Know what your getting into. Upgrade and learn to dominate the platform.

Be the one doing the selling!
