Your body makes all the cholesterol it needs, but most people get even more cholesterol from foods they eat, which increases the chances that waxy substances will line the artery walls and clog up the blood vessels. A colesterol-screening blood test gives you some numbers measured in milligrams of cholesterol per deciliter of blood.
So what do all those numbers mean? Total cholesterol level should be at or below 200mg/dl. A range of 200-239 mg/dl is borderline high, and 240 mg/dl and above is very high. Doctors will also take reading from LDL and HDL cholesterols. For LDL the bad cholesterol a level from LDL and HDL cholesterols. For HDL, good cholesterol a level of 60 of 160 mg/dl or above is high. For LDL, good cholesterol a lovel of 60 mg/dl or more is good and helps to lower your risk of heart disease. Remember that HDL cholesterol protects you against heart disease, so for HDL, higher numbers are better. A level less than 40 mg/dl is low and increases your risk for developing heart disease.
