I wanted to learn more about using surveys to identify hot buttons for my customers. I ran across this article that I thought was worth sharing here.
"The most successful online businesses understand the value of obtaining a thorough knowledge of their customers and prospects. Even though there are many ways to analyze and understand what your target audience really wants, the most effective approach to it is to simply ask them. That's right, by running targeted surveys with a specific aim and purpose, you will be able to grasp what's going on in the minds of your target audience, something that lets you in their shoes. If you want to learn how to create successful surveys, the following information will show you how.
The first thing you should do is have a short explanation about the purpose of your survey and what you'll be doing with the information. Be direct and up front about your purpose for creating a survey, as your customers will appreciate this and be more likely to want to respond. It's also a good idea to reassure them that this survey will be quick and painless for them to fill out, which will put their minds at ease.
You can increase the interest in your surveys by discussing the results with the respondents once you've collected them all. Most of the time, people that take a survey are curious about the results as they want to see how many people agree with their point of view and share the same opinion. As long as someone takes the trouble to complete your survey, you should keep them informed when the results come in. You don't have to share every little minute detail about the survey, but even the most basic stats are sometimes helpful to share.
Keep in mind that many people love to express their opinions, and your survey gives them a chance to do this. For such people, there's no need to give them any special reward to answer a survey, as they don't consider this a chore at all. You can separate your survey takers into two groups, then -those who will participate in it for no reason except that they want to and those who will demand a reward (which you can give them a way to opt in for).
If you've never experimented with surveys, it's natural to be a little concerned that you might create one and have hardly anyone actually participate. As long as you plan your surveys well, and use the methods outlined in this article, you should have no problem getting people to respond to them. After creating a successful survey, the next step is to use the information you gain wisely, which means making any adjustments based on what your customers actually want." Zachary Scott
