Getting Business From People Who Aren't Online
Although we conduct business online, that does not mean that all of your marketing efforts should be limited to the internet. This is an easy trap to fall into because it is convenient to just sit at your computer and conduct all of your business without ever leaving home, making phone calls, or talking to people face-to-face. Marketing on the internet is becoming more competitive as we speak. No matter where you are you have an opportunity to market your site. It's easy, just get your site's link in front of their eyes. Following are some of the most basic offline techniques to use and profit from.
Direct mail is still an advertising technique with huge potential. This is the classical advertising technique of simply sending a brochure or postcard to people via the postal service. You can use your computer for one part of this process: creating and printing the letters or postcards, which will cut down on expenses. Another way to save on expenses is to use postcards, which cost the least to mail out. Think of what physical businesses might want or need what you are selling; these can make good potential customers. You can also send out mail to targeted lists of non-business owners as well. You should become familiar with any laws about sending out mail (e.g. some people may be on do not mail lists) before you embark on a direct mail campaign.
Try leaving your business card in books at the library. A very effective way to use these cards is to find books at a bookstore or library that are similar to your site and then insert one of them in each book. They don't want you doing this but it's easy to pass off as a person who is looking for something to read. Don't be alarmed, you have probably already came across flier and cards discretely waiting between the pages of a book.
Surely you've heard many radio ads in your lifetime; have you ever thought about buying one for your own business? Consider how many people listen to the radio at work or while driving; the only downside is that radio advertising is quite expensive, though sometimes you can finance it creatively by some form of barter for example. Just think of the many places people have their radios on, such as driving to or home from work, or maybe while exercising at the gym. If thousands of people are listening, what if even ten percent of them went to your site? This could bring you a multitude of new customers and sales!
No one is online all the time, so there are many different ways you can market to people offline! It's a good idea to put aside a certain part of your marketing budget for offline marketing. If you only promote yourself on the internet, you are not going to be seen at all by a surprising number of people! Why would you limit yourself in that way? You'll do much better by making the most out of every marketing option you have.

| | | | | Absolutely fantastic advice. I have used flyers and ads in shop windows successfully. There are many ways to advertise offline, including ads on your car, shop windows, business cards etc.

| | | | | Like I said, I'm still old school, sometimes the offline market you get better results, because you have physical interaction with a potential prospect. Great poinst made on offline marketing way to go Sharon! |
| | | | | Sharon, great blog! So many of us forget about the "offline market". Direct mail has become another great avenue to approach your "target market" as well. There are some good tips here! Thanks for sharing and much success to you! ~Kris Karafotas |
| | | | | Something to think about, right? Sometimes I get so caught up in my online stuff, I completely forget about those who aren't online at all (seniors, perhaps) or are just not online very much - like the whole building full of seniors right across the street from me! |
| | | | | Sharon, you make some really valid points. We could very well be the people who help others get online and start doing business. Just goes to show us that online and offline marketing works hand in hand. Thanks for your words of wisdom. |
