The success of a home business depends on many things. One thing in particular is how you advertise. There are the usual ways, such as the Yellow Pages (although I believe the standard Yellow Pages may be on its way out), that offer good advertising at a price, but there are many free or inexpensive ways to get the news out to people that you have something to offer that they want!
When running a business from home, you must provide a way for your customers to contact you regularly! You should be sure to provide enough means of contact to allow them to reach you at any time. Have an answering machine (biz voicemail) for the business, fax machine (these may be fading in use, as well), email and voice mail. If they can at least leave a message, they will be content as long as you get back to them in a reasonable amount of time.
Running a business out of your home is going to bring a lot of phone traffic your way. You will definitely want to invest in a separate phone line for the business. You can turn the ringer off or muted for that phone when you are not open for calls. A majority of the American population has gone to strictly using cellular phones, so you might want to look at all your options for communicating effectively with your customers - land lines and cellular lines.
An e-book is an excellent way for any home business owner to get into a second stream of income which is mostly passive. For example, an accountant can write an e-book on all of the write-offs available to a small business and sell it to customers, then put it on Amazon for more exposure.
Include a coupon in the boxes of the products that you have sold. These coupons can apply to the exact product that they have purchased or even be a percentage off of their next purchase. If the customer gets a savings coupon in their package, they are more likely to return to cash-in that coupon.
