With the unemployment rate still high and more people unemployed for long periods of time, the common wisdom is that this is not the time to start any kind of business. The most affected are either older workers who have been let go or younger workers with little to no work experience. Underemployment, those working at less than their experience, skill and previous income levels is a fact of working life for many, and a possible long term trend for all.
Baby Boomers who have been laid off and have been draining their retirement and savings accounts may not financially recover at all, despite the recent stock market and mutual fund market gains. Many of them are now expecting to work longer instead of retiring, as they had hoped.
Recent college graduates are finding what older job seekers have, there are too many applicants for any job opening. Younger workers lucky enough to find a "career" position must be prepared to devote their waking hours to their employer to attain some measure of security, but no guarantee of it.

And, as stated above, while the recent poor economy has not been kind to older workers, they still believe that they can make vital contributions as workers and entrepreneurs in addition to tapping into their massive purchasing power with products to help them remain vital, youthful and healthy.
