The Various Side Effects of Advanced Prostate Cancer Treatments and their Remedies

Dr.  Echt explains the various side effects of advanced prostate cancer and the remedies.

Irving, Texas – Feb 17, 2019 - There are several treatment options for advanced prostate cancer which are used to prolong the life of a patient. But sometimes the treatments can cause side effects that wash away one’s quality of life. Advanced prostate cancer treatments can cause both short term, that can subside with time, and long term side effects that a patient will live with for many years.

The side effects of prostate cancer treatment vary according to the type of treatment or combination of treatments used,” explained Dr. Echt. "Some can create long-lasting issues while others will only last for a short time. It is best to fully understand these treatments and side effects before consenting to treatment. When making your treatment decisions, take note of their alternatives, benefits, and risks."

•    Post-Chemotherapy Nausea – Since chemotherapy drugs are meant to destroy both cancerous and healthy cells, a patient will feel nauseated. To counter this feeling, the doctor can prescribe anti-nausea medication. Patients who experience diarrhea and dehydration are advised to avoid salty, spicy, fried and greasy foods. They can stick to bland and light foods with a constant intake of water.

•    Urinary Incontinence – Men with advanced prostate cancer can experience permanent urinary incontinence after surgery. Surgery and radiation therapy can damage the nerves and cause a leakage of urine permanently or temporarily. Exercise can help to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles in patients with stress incontinence. For severe incontinence, only surgical procedures will help to support the urethra, and control urine to stop the incontinence.

•    Erectile Dysfunction – Erectile dysfunction occurs when all the nerves surrounding the penis are damaged. This interrupts the blood flow to the penis and makes it difficult for the patient to get or maintain an erection. The situation can be permanent or temporary. To treat erectile dysfunction, a patient can get injections, implants, vacuum pumps, and penis rings, among other treatments.

"The side effects of treatments for advanced prostate cancer can leave the patient feeling very weak," continued Dr. Echt. “Even though they may not be fully eradicated, patients can take guided steps to manage the side effects from the treatments.”
