What Is your "Freerider?"

 What Is your "Freerider?"

If you have ever had an opportunity to visit Yosemite National Park in California you will recognize how much of an accomplishment this is. And a scary one at that. One of the Park's premier attractions is El Capitan -- a 3000 foot high vertical face. Straight up. Several have lost their lives trying to make the climb with ropes and safety gear. Doing so without any safety equipment whatsoever boggles the mind.

This climb is astounding. The geology is fascinating, and the climber is nearly superhuman.

For those that have not seen it, let me give you some perspective. El Capitan is a sheer wall that is 500 feet higher than the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building stacked on top of each other.

On Saturday, 6/3/2017, Alex Honnold climbed, FREE SOLO, (no ropes or any safety gear at all, just climbing shoes and a chalk bag), a 3,000 foot El Cap route called "Freerider"...
Oh, and he did it in under 4 hours!!!

Historic. Free climbing El Cap. Without. A. Rope. So not just free climbing El Cap, free SOLOing El Cap. This is not just the Holy Grail but like discovering life on another planet. Incredible.

According to an exclusive report by National Geographic, Honnold began climbing Freerider (5.13a) at approximately 5:32 a.m. and topped out 3 hours and 56 minutes later at 9:28 a.m., all without the protection of rope or pre-placed gear.

As part of his training, Honnold free soloed a Yosemite route called Excellent Adventure.       Photo: Jimmy Chin/National Geographic

What Is your "Freerider?"

"Years ago, when I first mentally mapped out what it would mean to free solo Freerider, there were half a dozen of pitches where I was like, ‘Oh that’s a scary move and that’s a really scary sequence, and that little slab, and that traverse,’” Honnold said.

“There were so many little sections where I thought ‘Ughh—cringe.’ But in the years since, I’ve pushed my comfort zone and made it bigger and bigger until these objectives that seemed totally crazy eventually fell within the realm of the possible.” - Alex Honnold

There are some things that words just can not describe. I can understand how one can train to be physically prepared for a climb like this, but I can not even begin to imagine how Alex Hannold is able to control his emotions while climbing El Capitan with every foot and hand hold being a matter of life and death. Over 3,000 vertical feet - no safety devices, no rope, no help and he did it in under 4 hours - simply amazing.

the last of the human freedoms - to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one's own way."

Over the years I've climbed El Capitan in Yosemite Valley many times.I lived at the eastern entrance to the park from 1993-2009.

Spent many days and nights on the side of El Capitan climbing, and hauling tons of gear, food, water and cheap whiskey, just to climb one route.

Some of the pitches he did, Ive been on and I can NOT comprehend climbing those pitches without multiple ropes and a 40 pound rack of gear hanging around my neck...

This is amazing and probably the greatest, purest climb ever done in the history climbing. I can truly say that this climb is a monument to what a human body, mind and spirit is capable of at its best.

Be YOU. Don’t be someone else. YOU are a unique individual. Be proud… Rock it loud. -- Apolo Anton Ohno

“With free-soloing, obviously I know that I’m in danger," said Honnold, "but feeling fearful while I’m up there is not helping me in any way. It’s only hindering my performance, so I just set it aside and leave it be.”

The first ascent of El Capitan was in 1958, and took a team of climbers with hundreds of pounds of gear over 45 days to climb. Alex did it with chalk and climbing shoes in under 4 hours!
