What makes the ideal leader tick? Empires, organizations and businesses are built on these naturally motivated individuals. Countless books, seminars and courses offer to teach skills behind leadership but why does there seem to be such a shortage of ideal ones in the workplace?

Coming from a diverse work, education and social background, I know and can appreciate that ideal leaders aren’t bred in the classroom, nor do they spontaneously walk out of a seminar with these qualities. They make these ingredients a part of themselves, a persona and lifelong dedication to better their own skill set and causing inspiration around them.

Here are our 7 ingredients of the ideal leader:

1. Understand their teams

Ideal leaders recognize the fate of success lies with the people around them. Variety and diversity shouldn’t be looked upon as a hurdle, but as an opportunity. A team members strengths and weaknesses should complement other members, and vice versa. Moreover, ideal leaders understand that different perspectives will work towards a better end result, instead of a singular mindset.

2. Know the importance of Patience

Success doesn’t come easy. Rome wasn’t built in a day and success is often associated with a trail of failures without lost of enthusiasm. There are thousands of similar quotes, but patience is becoming an under appreciated quality in our world. Instead, replaced by pseudo “multitasking”, and “speed efficiency”. Every ideal leader throughout history understands the importance of being patient. Rushing progress will inevitably lead to unnecessary road blocks and mistakes along the way.


3. Leads by Example

Ideal leaders see themselves as just that. They evoke inspiration by being the very thing their team looks for. Modeling traits of critical thinking, honesty and a creative mind-set, leaders master ideal behavioral patterns that are mirrored by their environment.

4. Appreciates conflict

Conflict brewing? Ideal leaders embrace it. Each conflict during a project offers the opportunity to learn. This in turn builds character and will inspire if handled correctly. And don’t forget to celebrate!


5. Takes Initiative

Taking initiative can be the difference between standing out and being just another tool in the shed. Ideal leaders inspire initiative and treasure spontaneous brilliance. If not brought forward, great ideas and projects lose their vigor –Take Action!

Be the one who lifts people up, not puts them down.

6. Are Flexible

Not in a physical sense (although perhaps entertaining). Ideal leaders are dynamic. Masters of their industry, they know change to be a constant reality and if not creating it, anticipate it. Outside the box thinking is becoming extinct in our technology dependent world, and adopting to change has become even more valuable.


7. Have Vision

A trait that every ideal leader shares. If not by words, than envisioned mentally. An overall grand scheme. The exact formula or experiments may change overtime, but when pulling a project together, inspiring others or conducting their own work, vision should always be in the back of their minds.

The true work of a leader is to help others see possibilities they never saw previously. Be a leader and be the light!

Ideal leaders aren’t necessarily owners, CEO’s or even directors. They are simply self aware of themselves and have a desire to excel in their field. Leadership is a life-long journey full of consistent self-reflection and reinvention.
