Two People, One Grave

Two People, One Grave

There’s a funny story I read once about two old ladies walking through a graveyard one afternoon in the English countryside. They came upon a tombstone that read, “Here lies John Smith, a politician and an honest man.”

“Good heavens!” one of the ladies said. “Isn’t it awful that they had to put two people in the same grave!”

I like that story because it makes an important point about character (no matter what one’s profession is). If you or I want great people to follow us, help us along, stand beside us, and celebrate us when we experience success, then it’s important for them to be able to trust that our character is strong and intact.

Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “Every great institution is the lengthened shadow of a single man."

I believe character has great power in determining how far you’ll go and who will go the journey with you.

You see, your character growth determines the height of your personal growth. To understand character is to understand the value of trust. The two are bonded together. If your character is lacking, then you’ll notice you don’t keep the trust of others for long.

Well, you may be wondering then, what is character and how do you get it?

I have Four Dimensions to Character I want to share with you. We’ll look at just two in this presentation. Keep reading.

“To understand character is to understand the value of trust.”

- John C Maxwell

"Sometimes the things that may or may not be true are the things a man needs to believe in the most. That people are basically good; that honor, courage, and virtue mean everything; that power and money, money and power mean nothing; that good always triumphs over evil; and I want you to remember this, that love... true love never dies. You remember that, boy. You remember that. Doesn't matter if it's true or not. You see, a man should believe in those things, because those are the things worth believing in."

To develop strong character—and thus have stronger and longer lasting influence with people—there are four dimensions you must master. I’m going to give you two today to get you started.

  1. Be authentic. If you want to develop strong character, you have to “live between the lines.” What that means is you have to live between your successes and your failures. You have to be confident in what you’re skilled in and do well, and you also have to be humble in your shortcomings and areas where you need improvement. You’re not going to fool anyone but yourself if you don’t act with complete authenticity.
  2. Manage your weakness. We all need guardrails. Honestly, I believe we’re all just one step from stupid most of the time! If you want to develop your character, you’ve got to give someone you trust permission to hold you accountable to your weaknesses. What I mean is giving someone permission to question your motives, behaviors, and private actions. This person is in place to make sure that you’re living above board. None of us are immune to weak moments in life. We develop character when we mind our guardrails and stay away from stupid!

Now, these are just two of the four dimensions to great character. I really want you to have all four, so stay tuned for the other two dimensions in an upcoming episode.

Make a list of the people you consider to be the most trustworthy individuals in your life.

Think about it for a minute. If you were in a jam or had a crisis of any kind, who are the three people you would call first to listen and to help?

Now, I want you to consider this as well:

Are YOU in anyone’s top three?

Are you someone who people trust?

I made a list a long time ago, and it helped me to recognize who I value in my life for their character. It also helped me consider how trustworthy I am to the people around me. I believe, if you want to develop the leader within you, it starts with developing your character. If you want to be big on the outside, you have to BIGGER on the inside. When you develop character within yourself, you can begin to develop trust with others.

You can’t force it to happen. It’s slow to develop and it takes intentionality. Though you can do it if you want to really become a leader who is worth following.
