Why Add a Howe To Your Team?

I'd like to take a moment and share about why more companies, teams, and businesses should use Gordie Howe as the "Model" Employee/ Teammate/ Recruit.

For simplicity sake, I chose to use the term 'hire' though you can certainly apply any appropriate term that fits your situation.

Gordie played his last 80 Game professional hockey season at the strapping age of 51 years of age. Why is this important? Hire people who love what they do, are passionate, and want to be at work every day. I am sure at 51 years of age it wasn't easy for Gordie to lace his skates and hit the ice every day. In reality it probably was a feat to drag a sore body out of bed every day. Gordie loved the game. The desire to come to work every day, the energy, the passion is what makes a great new hire/ recruit. Energy and passion should be integral in your company culture and team building effort.

Hire the well rounded, the versatile. Gordie was not a narrow skills player. His skill set was diverse, well rounded, and though he was one of the greatest players of all time, it stemmed from his diversity. Gordie was one of few players who could shoot right and left handed. Gordie was fast, strong, and had finesse. Gordie could shoot, skate, and fight. Too many people silo their careers. Are they the best fit for your team?

Gordie led from the front. There is a reason there is a Gordie Howe hat trick: A goal, an assist, and a fight in a game. Hire leaders. Hire the front of the pack. Hire those committed to excellence!

But wait... there is more...

Howe stories are the stuff of legend, and now the rest of the story!

Everyone who crossed his path has a story about Gordie Howe. Few of them have to to with his greatness on the ice. Most are about his greatness as a man.

Jerry Serviss never got to play in the NHL though he did get to play with Gordie Howe, and that means much like everyone whoever crossed paths with Mr. Hockey, he has a Howe story to share.

The fascinating thing for anyone who spent even a scant amount of time in conversation with Howe was that this legend’s anecdotes were never about his legendary status.

He once recounted to me how when he attended camp with the New York Rangers at the age of 15, the first day he watched the other players put on the gear to see where everything went.

A child of the Great Depression, Howe’s family was too poor to afford hockey equipment, so catalogues were his shin guards.

Dr. John Finley, for decades the Red Wings’ team physician, recalled stitching Howe up during a game, and being asked to work quickly so he could get back to the action.

From 1947-60, Red Kelly was Howe’s Detroit teammate. They lived at the same rooming house. Howe was instrumental in Kelly meeting his wife Andra but after Kelly’s trade to Toronto, closeness was exchanged for close quarters.

“The first game we’re playing against Detroit and against Howe after 12 ½ years, he’s got his arm around me with his stick around me and the puck’s in the corner,” Kelly remembered. “We’re going to be the first ones there, so I figure I’m just going to freeze the puck there with my feet.

“Gordie leans right into my ear and says, ‘How’s the wife?’ And I sort of turn to respond, and he almost puts me through the boards.”

A ruthless assassin on the ice, off the ice you’d never meet a kinder soul.

Most of all, what people remember from their meetings with Howe is the humbleness of the man.

The Pittsburgh Penguins were at Joe Louis Arena one night when Gordie was there. Postgame, he quietly made his way to the visitors’ dressing room, where Penguins captain Sidney Crosby was invisible behind a media scrum.

Howe walked around the mob, sat down on the bench and gently tugged on Crosby’s arm.

When Sid the Kid turned and saw Mr. Hockey, his eyes lit up, his jaw fell agape.

Even the current greats of the game were awed in his presence yet Howe never gave off any airs of greatness.

Kris Draper was a rookie with the Red Wings when Howe visited the dressing room and immediately walked over to chat with him.

“I remember going home and calling my dad and saying ‘I just met Gordie, shook his hand and talked to him,’” Draper said, still buzzing with excited by the memory.

Today I honor Gordie Howe.
