Many business operations are now changing mainly because of the many advances in technology. Among these advances in technology, the internet is very influential, and social networking sites have become mainstream in today’s society. You can stay in touch with family and friends, build a fan base for your business and do so much more. For a long time, the only reason people joined social networking sites was to have fun. However, due to their growing popularity and the number of audience they attract, this has now changed. Businesses are now using these social sites because they can get to their targeted audience easily and tell them about their services. Not only is it effective, this method of advertising is much cheaper, making it a preferred method as compared to other traditional ways. You can't deny the heightened competition in today's marketplace and often threatens the stability of an enterprise and those businesses that do not follow the latest trends. It is a sad fact that thousands of entrepreneurs go out business everyday simply because they could not get reach enough people, especially potential clients. To avoid ending up like these people, you should keep up with the latest trend and be always be on the lookout for fresh opportunities. Now, before you start thinking that business social networking sites are worry free tools in promoting your business, bear in mind that not all networking sites as what they claim to be. However, not all of these business social networking sites are good vehicles to promote your enterprise so do not just join any online networks simply because they are free and they are accessible. Make sure that you join a site where you can meet like minded people who are willing to share their expertise. On Facebook you set up a profile for yourself and can then start viewing the profiles of others. MySpace was around long before Facebook but has now been phased out somewhat by the Facebook takeover. MySpace is pretty much fading out because of the simplicity of Facebook in comparison. MySpace pages are more like personal webpages and take a lot more work to keep up with. Twitter is another more recent social networking site to hit super stardom. In 145 characters or less a person can type in what they want to say and it allows for faster updates to those who are following them. It is quickly gaining in popularity and may even beat out Facebook sometime soon. Two other business related social networks have recently caught my attention. Three of the most commonly used options are creating networks, creating profiles for a company or product and using banner ads or display ads. Display ads are placed on any part of a web page and they use up very little space, yet they serve the purpose that they are intended to serve. Creating networks or groups that allow people to learn about a product, company or service has also become very popular. The marketer will learn the kind of audience they have as well as whether there is a market for their product based on the number of people who join the group. Other than that, members who join the group will have a chance to comment about the product or criticize it and hence enable the producers to improve. Creating company, service or product profiles is also another popular social networking tool that people use. This strategy is mainly not for advertising but for educating the public about what they do and about their area of expertise. Because the purpose of most social sites is still not shopping for products, advertising should be casual and friendly. These sites are a great source of advertising and getting the word out.
