How To Get Much Better At Facebook

There’s over than a billion people on Facebook.

It's a powerful tool to meet new people.

Most entrepreneurs are terrible at it.

Because talking to people is a skill.

It’s a skill that’s not rewarded academically.  The professor doesn’t give you an A for chatting in Geography.

It’s a skill that’s not rewarded on a resume in a job interview.  The Vice President of Buggy Whips doesn’t promote you for your water cooler skills.  In fact, if you have charisma and people skills you’re usually seen as a threat by the higher ups.

Here’s what happened to me.  See if it sounds familiar.

I got good grades.  I was told to go to university to get a piece of paper for a lot of money.

They told me to take that piece of paper, put on a tie, talk to an older man in a tie, give him my resume, and ask for a job.

They told me to sit at desk 8.5 hours a day, listen to people complain and solve other people’s messes, and every 2 weeks on a Friday they will give me a paycheck.

Do that every week for the next 45 years.  It felt like a death sentence, didn’t it?

Most people hate their jobs.  But only about 1 in 10 has the burning fire to start a business.  We look around and realize either we need to borrow money from investors to start a real business where you hire other people in ties to solve messes, or you have to go out and sell something.

So we call ourselves entrepreneurs, but really we buy a big box of stuff and try to go out and sell it to someone.  It might be a box of water filters, skin care, hair care, beauty products, health products, pet care, diet products, or crypto-currency.  Sometimes the box is light, sometimes the box is heavy.

But at the end of the day the box is really filled with dreams of what’s possible.

So we go out there in the big scary world only to find out people hate to sell and they hate to be sold.  Nothing in our education prepared us for this!

We don’t know what to say.

We don’t know how to find people to talk to.

We are scared.

Most quit.  Learning new skills that pay big money is hard.

Has this ever happened to you?

You’re on Facebook.  A message pops up that a total stranger wants to connect with you.

You accept.

The first words out of their mouth is a link, which creates a huge colorful box in your Facebook chat window and it has images of whatever is inside their box.

Your skin crawls.  You close the window and groan.

That poor person.  A box full of dreams and no skills.

Want to get better at Facebook?

Learn how to ask questions.

Get good at using the skills that you can get for free in How To Win Friends And Influence People.

Learn patience.

Learn how to help others for free so they want to look at what you’re doing.  Learn about the Law of Reciprocity in Dr. Cialdini’s brilliant book.

Some entrepreneurs, keeping an open mind, get 20-30 leads per day from social media without irritating people.  A free cheat sheet called The Rockefeller Method  is floating around that explains step-by-step how it’s done.

Talking to someone on social media is the exact same experience as chatting with someone in the grocery line.  Stop laughing at the old 3 foot rule and learn the skills to make it work in the 21st century.

And remember to tell those poor lost networkers "For heaven’s sake stop spamming your link to people who didn’t ask for it!"
