Managing A Life Of Stress And Take Care Of You

To manage a life of stress and take care of you, you have to first recognize the cause of your stress.

We hear about cause and effect...well whatever the cause the effect is stress. Is that what you want? By no means and so it is a matter to deal with up front by identifying your stress points and plan their elimination with help if necessary.

"The greatest weapon against stress is our ability to choose one thought over another" - William James

Are you always stressed out about one thing or another - relationship, family, loss of a loved one, your job?  Well don't!

Knowing  how to deal with situations that have you feeling stressed is the first step in effectively  managing stress. There are a lot of information available on how to avoid stress but I would like to focus on some tips.

Choices you make

Your first choice would be to go to the doctor and by all means go in order to rule out any physical problems that might be linked.  However  he is most likely to give you medication and unless you face whatever the problem is and deal with it, all you will be doing is covering, making a bad situation worse and possibly affecting your physical health with certain types of medication.

Choose to:
  • Spend time outdoors and commune with what's around your
  • Choose to go walking - it is stress free
  • Listen to music that is calming
  • Start to write in your journal  - just write whatever comes to mind until you find order
  • Do some garden work
  • Get comfy with a good book - it takes your mind off what is stressing you out
  • Ease the tension with a good workout

Don't Sweat The Small Stuff

Dr.  Richardson Carlson in his book Don't Sweat The Small Stuff  says you can  learn to put things into perspective, making small changes daily by choosing your battles wisely and not allowing the little things in your life to drive you crazy.

Many people not recognizing stress as a silent killer take no action to try to reduce it, thereby living dangerously.  When you are stressed your body produces a powerful stress hormone called cortisol which over prolonged period could damage your health and put you in danger of developing heart problems.

Here are some things you can do to help you cope or reduce your stress levels:

1. Exercise - with guidance or simply walk for about  30 - 45 minutes daily. I find walking first thing early in the morning is a good way to start your day. It sets the pace and reduces stress

2.  Grieving for a lost one? Try to recall all the positive things about them and keep them in your heart.

3. Relationship issues, Family choices making you feel stressed ? Try to step back and look at your situation objectively.  They may be just as stressed out as you are.  So you have to think " this is not about me" and try to remove yourself emotionally from whatever is going on.  I find that works but it comes with practice until it becomes a way of life and you are no longer sweating the small stuff.

4. Try to keep yourself and work organized, avoiding clutter. You might be surprised how getting rid of stuff makes you feel lighter and more relaxed.

5.  Find something that you enjoy doing and work at it. For example.... A hobby, creating a journal, start a coin or stamp collection, scrapbook, just be creative. You will find satisfaction in pursuing what you love or something interesting, while easing your stress an taking care of you.

While in the moment things look bad or unmanageable, try to remember that nothing lasts forever and acknowledge that it is only temporary, that what is taking place does not define who you are. Thinking along these lines will ease your stress.

Not getting enough sleep increases stress. A good night's sleep refreshes the mind, keeping you focused and generating more energy, plus of course good nutritional habits. I like to do what I call cat napping  - a 15 minute spell - It is regenerative.

The foregoing should be helpful in you reconditioning your mind to deal with stress. Just remember that you are in control of you. Go make the small changes, manage a life of stress and take care of you.
