FTP. What is it and how do I use it?

FTP. What is it and how do I use it? FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. An FTP client is a program that allows you to easily move files from one computer to another or to upload files to a website. You create the pages for your website on your computer using a Web page editor and save the files to a folder. You will then need to move the files to the server where your website site will be hosted using FTP. There are many different FTP clients that you can download from the Internet. Some of these can be downloaded for free and others on a try before you buy basis. I use FileZilla which is free and works well. How Does It Work? Once you have downloaded and setup your FTP client on your computer and you have a hosting account setup with a service provider that offers FTP you are ready to get started. Open your FTP client. You will see several different boxes that you will need to fill out. First you will type in your “Profile Name” This is the name you are going to give to your website. For example, “my blog”. The next box is the “Host Name” or “Address”. This is the name of the server that your website is being hosted on. You can get this from your hosting provider. It will look something like this: . When opening your hosting account you will have set up a “User ID” and “Password”. Type your ID and password into the FTP client and you are ready to connect to the server. Once you have all your settings done click on the connect button and it will connect to your host server. On the right screen you will see the files of your hosting provider and folders where your website files will go. On the left screen you will see the files stored on your computer. Using FTP Now that you are connected you can start transferring your files or a complete website to your hosting server. On the left screen are the files on your computer. First you will need to locate the folder where you stored your website. Find the file(s) or complete website that you want to transfer in the same way as you would when searching on your hard drive. The right side of the screen are the files on the hosting server. Go to the folder where you want to transfer your files to and open it by double clicking. This folder will be the “public” folder or the folder which is seen when looking at your website on a browser. Now you can either double click on the file you are transferring or you can select it it and then click on the arrow that points to the right side of the screen. Either way you will now have a file on your hosting server. The file can also be transferred by draging it from the left screen and dropping it in the right screen. To move a file from the hosting server to your computer do the same thing in reverse by moving the file from the right to the left screen. Once you have followed all the steps you can now see your website in your browser by typing in your domain name. Congratulations. You are now the proud owner of your own website. All that remains to do is to make sure everything is working the way it should, fix any errors and keep it updated. Hosting: My website:
