WINDOW'S U-FACTOR U-factor gives the rate of heat transfer through the window (from inside to outside when it is cold, and from outside to inside when it is hot) per unit area and per unit temperature difference. In the U.S., the typical units are BTU/hr·ft2·°F. The lower the U-factor, the less heat energy escapes your home in the winter, and the more heat enters your home in the summer. As an example, if you had a 2 x 4 foot window with a U-factor of 0.3 in your house when the outside air temperature was 0°F and the inside air temperature 70°F, the heat loss could be found: 0.3 BTU
PRESSURE WASHING A WOOD DECK Since your deck was built or if mildew has built up on the deck, it’s time to break out the pressure washer. Use care so that you don’t scallop the decking or rails by getting too close with the wand in the arc of your swing. However, you may have to get fairly close to the deck surface to get the stubborn mildew off. Just keep the wand at an even height as you move it along the decking planks. A 20% solution of bleach-water can also be sprayed on the mildew to aid removal. Just be careful of trees and shrubs if they are growing near the deck. If the deck has gotten dark due to mildew or has weathered to a deep gray, you’ll need to patiently work a 3” swath with your pressure-washer wand along the length and width of the deck to expose the fresh wood surface below. A 12 foot by 12 foot deck will take about an hour and a half to clean the decking and another 30 minutes to an hour to clean the railings depending on the design of the deck
