Good afternoon and welcome back ! BlogNetwork.com has officially launched! There are those of you who have diligently read this blog. Your content is primed and stacks. And then there’s a few of you who are new. excited, and completely lost as to where to start. Start here, my friends, with TFT’s look at choosing your subject matter.
What to write. What to write. It’s the same anxiety from 10th grade when you had to write a semester’s worth of journal entries in a single night. Unfortunately, my brother cornered the market on stealing music lyrics, so we’ll have to be more resourceful. (True story. He copied all of Red Hot Chili Pepper’s Blood Sex Magik into his notebook and was promptly sent to the school psychiatrist, despite that album being nominated for a Grammy.) First, let’s look at your Goals. I’m guessing here, but if I were you about to start my Blog my short term goals would look like this:
A Blog that’s fun to work on
An opportunity to create meaningful and helpful content
Something that can reach a wide audience
Something with an opportunity to reach a wide audience
Now what about long term goals? Where do you want your Blog to be in 6 months? A year? 3 years? Do you want 100,000 readers? A blog that pays you? Keep these goals in mind when choosing your topic! Now that we have goals in mind, here are 3 Brainstorming techniques to get us there. You can use any one of these, or better yet a combination. Technique 1: Media Surfing Find out what’s Trending on Twitter, the top headlines on Yahoo, Digg, & Reddit. Write them down. Technique 2: Whittle Down1. Start with a Broad, Already Popular Topic (Maybe one you snagged offDigg?): Music Concerts2. Chose of segment of the topic: Indie Band Music Concerts3. Choose yet another segment of that sub topic: Denver Indie Band Music Concerts (Hey, that’s the awesome folks at Ultra5280!) Technique 3: Lists Make 3 Lists. Topics you have experience in Topics you have an interest in Topics you think you will be would writing at Hopefully you’ll see some overlap! Now that you have your list of potential topics, answer each of the following questions.
Is this topic popular? Is this topic growing in popularity or has it reached it’s peak and is now receding? If you’re considering blogging about Tribal Tattoos and their meaning, you missed your chance. Who are your competitors? Do not start a blog about celebrity gossip. Perez Hilton will eat your soul. What is the competition neglecting? Read as: “How will my Blog be different?” Will you have enough content? Do you have enough inspiration and first hand sources? Cross out items from your list that do not meet your goals. Make a short list of about five topics. Look at them closely. Are you passionate about the topic? Can you talk somebody’s ear off?If challenged, can you debate the topic?Don’t choose a subject that you’re too sensitive about. Blogger’s need to grow, evolve, an be willing to change their opinion when exposed to new facts. If you answered yes, you’ve found your topic! Thanks for coming by! There’s rumors around the office for a Prize who whomever comes up with the most original Blog idea. All your hard work may pay off in a BIG way! Check back later this week when we’ll be discussing how to take your topic and set yourself out from the crowd!
