How to know what your readers want

Here are only a few of the many, many ways to know for sure (and you can put them into practice right away).

bright ideaTalk to Them
It's easy to overlook the obvious. ;-) Simply pick up the phone, call a few clients and talk. Or chat with them at live conferences. They'll tell you all you need to know about what articles and other types of content make a difference in their lives, and they'll appreciate your inquiry.

Create a Survey
Get the insights you need by surveying your contact list. Offer an incentive for participation, such as a free special tool or a chance to win a consult with you. Two online survey tools that make the process super easy are: and

Talk to Colleagues
Shop talk can generate tons of great article ideas. Whether informally over tea or at professional meetings, spend time exploring what your colleagues are noticing about the needs of the people in your target market.

Join Facebook and LinkedIn Groups
Join groups whose members are the people you serve. Explore current and past posts to the group. After you've had a chance to get to know the group and begun to participate in it yourself, consider posting a question to the group that will help you ascertain content needs.

Search Twitter
Follow the people in your market, or that demographic, and see what they talk about, what their current challenges, aspirations and frustrations are. Try some "hashtag" key word searches and see what you come up with.

Monitor Online Forums
This is a goldmine. Some fabulous discussions take place on forums, such as Yahoo or Google groups. Spend some time looking at a group's past postings, and see how you can contribute to current discussions.

HARO (Help a Reporter Out)
Subscribe to to receive daily requests by journalists for sources for their articles. You know, reporters HAVE to have their fingers on the pulse of their marketplace. Peruse the listings to find out what journalists think are hot issues today.

And here's a final tip: carry a tiny notebook, or "idea catcher," with you at all times. You never know WHEN any of the above ways will generate your next best newsletter. If you don't capture it, it's gone!
