Very recently my daughter completed her State Board Exams at India. I was actively involved in her preparations for this important exam. We spent months preparing her, giving her external tuition and mock exams at home to prepare her for the big day. The day finally came and she sailed through all the days allotted for the exams and finally the last exam was completed. This was followed by the arduous task of waiting for the results. It took the Government Board 40 days to publish the results. We were informed that the answer sheets were sent to examiners spread out all over the state. So the answer sheets do a bit of travelling to various destinations corrected by different examiners, their capability and skill an unknown factor. So at times the future career of a student lies in the hand of a person whose capabilities may or may not fall in the questionable category. A risk I am not in favour of supporting. In this new age of advanced technology why are we still dependent on manual correction, which will without any doubt be completely inconsistent, therefore jeopardizing the future of thousands of students. Any examiner correcting beyond a certain number of answer sheets per day is bound to be distracted and casual. A crucial factor which goes strongly against manual correction. Delay in declaring results also plays into the hands of unscrupulous characters holding key positions. These so called officials for monetary gains are willing to tamper with actual results. I am a vociferous advocate of computerized examinations and corrections. My proposal is as follows: All Exams are conducted on computers, every student is provided with one in which at the appropriate time start answering questions which are objective with multiple options. Each question will have at least 8 options out of which only one will be the correct answer ( The reason for putting 8 options is that this ensures that every student has prepared well and studied the complete topic) they click on whichever option they think is right. When it comes to single line answers and essays, every student is informed in advance of certain keywords which they should incorporate in their answers and essays. Based on the use of these key words the computer will award them marks. An innovative programmer can create softwares which can award marks based on the content. Once the student has attempted all the questions and re-checked the answers where they have options to edit their answers, they press the submit button. The system immediately corrects every paper and within minutes all the marks are tabulated and stored in the main server. Once the student completes the exams for all the subjects, his marks for each subject are tabulated in the main server and the results can be declared the very next day or the day after. By this system we have ensured absolute consistency in correcting, no possibilities of manipulation and saved plenty of time and stress the students go through waiting painfully for 40 days to see their results. But the most important point of advantage is consistency in correction. No student will feel deprived or depressed as their final result will be on the basis of their labour and efforts and not on other factors. Result based purely on merit. What an exciting thought, hope this materializes during my lifetime.

| | | | | You have made some good points here. I have taken both types of tests and I freely admit the computer exam with same day results was less stressful. Just because I knew the answer right away. |
