Ginger & Beauty

We have all heard about legendary love stories like Romeo & Juliet, Cleopatra & Mark Antony, Lancelot & Guinvere and Orpheus & Eurydice etc. However how many of you have heard or seen of a similar type of love between two dogs?

Let me introduce Ginger & Beauty, two Indian breed dogs living on the street opposite our house in Chennai. I noticed their attachment to each other a few months back, and initially dismissed it to a typical male dog behaviour when a female is in season. But as the days passed, I observed and saw that Ginger the male was always protecting Beauty and hovering around her at all times. They eat together, sleep together, fight for their territory together and are never apart.

My daughter and I used to go for night walks, and this pair befriended us very quickly and faithfully followed us through the different streets even if it meant to move away from their territory. On such occasions we had to protect them from other street dogs.

They would faithfully wait every night for us to come out and walk along with us. Slowly my daughter started feeding them and now every morning they wait patiently near our gate to be allowed inside the compound during the day and take shelter in our garage. Needless to say they are always together. By late evening, after their dinner they leave the compound to patrol the streets surrounding our house.

Late one night I heard Ginger howling near our gate. I walked out to see what was bothering him and discovered that he was alone. Beauty seemed to have strayed away and he was asking for our help. Armed with a torch I assisted him in his search but we couldn’t find her anywhere. He kept whining all the time and his pleading look tore my heart. I tried consoling him but nothing seemed to work. He was inconsolable and kept running from street to street searching for her.

After what seemed an eternity, I heard him yelp for joy and saw them both running towards me from a distance. Ginger had found his love and he brought her to show me. That very moment it struck me that this was indeed unique and in all my years I was yet to see a bond between two dogs to be so strong.

Even today Ginger and Beauty are together and faithfully every morning are at our gates seeking shelter during the day and protecting us at night. I pray that they both have a long life together and dread the day when either of them is taken away by cruel fate.
