No one likes criticism, and why should we? By its very nature, criticism means that something is wrong or missing (according to the person giving the criticism), that you have flaws, that someone has found you lacking. Even constructive criticism can start planting seeds of doubt in your head.
If you have never received criticism or constructive criticism, you put yourself in a dangerous position of never improving. Criticism can be the catalyst that encourages you to change and or improve. It would be great if we could criticize ourselves, (which what we do in our heads is more like a beating than criticism) but it generally takes an objective person or at least a 3rd party, to give us tips or insights to improve ourselves. Don’t look at criticism as a bad thing, use criticism as a jumping board for improvement. Here are a few tips on how to handle criticism either good or bad:
Consider the source.
All criticism is not created equal. An expert giving you useful tips on how to improve should be given much more weight than a well-meaning friend or stranger. Find people that you look up to and that are honest. As your relationship develops you should consider their suggestions or criticism as ways to improve yourself. Changing takes time, sometimes. Take it one day at a time. Seek out “concrete” advice.
You can’t improve if no one gives you concrete advice.
Vague comments or advise isn’t good enough. Learn specifically what you need to do to improve, such as “work on your editorial skills or take a class on how to write a good blog.” If you hear the same criticism, from different sources... If you receive criticism from multiple, credible sources, you may want to consider changing or improving in that area. What happens if you ignore these types of multiple criticisms, nothing really except you’ll continue to hear the same criticism over and over again until you decide to improve in some way.
Are all criticism equal in value?
No not really. Listen to your gut in this case. You just don’t have the time to improve all aspects of yourself, so you need to divide and conquer. Focus on improving areas that you think need improvement. Table the stuff that just isn’t important to you for now or create a long term plan of improvement that makes the most sense to you.
Try and Try again.
When you’re trying to improve or change based on criticism, you’re going to fail. Failure is actually part of the improvement process. If you have concrete advice, then follow your action plan for improvement, and then try and try again. We learn best when we try things several times. Get criticism from the same person as before, after you have changed things or improved things. If you start hearing new tips for improvement, you know you’re getting better.
Most importantly, don’t let criticism get you down.
Don’t let the little voices in your head get you down, when it comes to criticism. You might feel that you’ll never get to where you want to be or there’s too much to learn. Relax. Breathe. Everyone started out as a beginner at one point. Enjoy the ride of what you’re doing, knowing you’re getting better all the time as you follow your plan of improvements.
