Sleep Is A Mystery

Sleep is a mystery. Other than sometimes remembering a dream it is something we know very little about because it’s when we surrender our normal consciousness to rest.

There are several stages of sleep. Stage 1 and 2 sleep are early in the process and more shallow. Rapid Eye Movement or REM sleep is when most of our dreams occur. If you look carefully you can see that the eyes move and twitch when a person is in this stage. It’s so vital that if you deprive a person of REM sleep for an extended period of time, they will lose their sanity.

Stage 3 sleep is the deepest and most restorative sleep stage. A full sleep cycle takes about 90 minutes to complete.
For better quality sleep, stop using all electronics (cell phones, computers and TVs) about an hour before you go to bed. These are very stimulating and make it hard to fall asleep.

Even if you are able to fall asleep with electronics you may be in a more agitated state.

Alcohol also disrupts sleep quality. Although it may help you get to sleep, it doesn’t facilitate staying asleep or getting good deep sleep throughout the night. If you are not driving, operating machinery or going to work, the best time to have alcohol is probably with your noon meal.

There are a lot of advantages to having your largest meal at noon and a glass of wine, preferably red, can be something that some people choose to include.

The last thing to think about in terms of getting to sleep is developing rituals or habits you repeat before you go to bed so your body knows it is time to wind down and go to sleep. If you need extra relaxation, taking a hot bath before bed can be helpful.
