Today I would like to talk about those heavily promoted “Spot On” flea and tick treatments like Front Line, Pet Armor, Advantage and others that are advertised as being safe for our pets.

Some time ago our Chihuahua, Cocoa, a puppy at the time, became infested with fleas. So we went to the store and purchased the spot on treatment called Front Line. As advertised the fleas went away in a short period of time. We continued treating him every month as the package recommended for several months. We then started noticing hair loss and open sores on his back, so we took him to the vet. The vet told us that it was probably just a skin allergy and prescribed us an expensive medication.

To make a long story short, after many trips to the vet and hundreds of dollars, Cocoa was actually getting worse instead of better. Therefore, I decided to do a little research for myself on the internet. After describing the symptoms in the search engines, what I discovered was quite shocking. Thousands of other pet owners were describing the same symptoms and they were all linked backed to the spot on flea and tick treatment that we had been using on Cocoa for months. READ ON it gets better!

“Spot On” treatments like Front Line contain a chemical neurotoxin that when absorbed through the animals skin and enters the bloodstream, the fleas and ticks then ingest the blood and the neurotoxin attacks the bugs central nervous system, killing it. WOW!

On March 24, 2010 the EPA issued a warning: “Flea Products May Injure Kill Pets.” This is after tens of thousands reported either deaths or injuries dues to the use of these spot on products. However, I speculate that in order to preserve pharmaceutical profits, this information has been suppressed.

Needless to say, I have stopped using any of the spot on flea and tick treatments on both my dogs. Poisoning my dogs at any “presumed safe level” is not acceptable. One of my friends recommended an all natural product called “Allipaws” that she was using with excellent results, so I tried it. Since that time “Cocoa the Chihuahua” has made a full recovery and has had no more previously described symptoms. Our other dog, “Rebel the Jack Russel,” used to have a nervous twitch that went away after discontinuing the spot on treatment and starting using Allipaws instead.

Allipaws is a product manufactured and distributed by Allicin Center. They also make excellent products for people too. I liked the products so well, that I became a Partner in the company. For more info see the link:  www.allicincenter.com/yorhealthpro

Nice post Bruce, it is something that should be widely known. Thank you for sharing this valuable information, when will companies realise that profit before safety is not acceptable!

Hi Bruce interesting and glad I read this. Many of us have pets and of coarse have to treat them for fleas. I too had to treat my cat but I was fortunate. He was okay. I will look out for this product.

Wow, very interesting and excellent first hand information Bruce! I am not a dog person - but my husband has 2 cocker spaniels and he uses Advantix I believe - which would also be a spot on treatment. His dogs have had no adverse affects from it, but I will certainly pass on this info to him. Anything natural is better for humans, so why not for animals?
