When building a network marketing business, one of the most daunting and uncomfortable tasks is getting on the phone and calling leads. Most network marketers never make one phone call and wonder why their downline is not growing or why what little downline they have is shrinking. However you generate your leads, calling them is an important and essential part of building the business.

Calling leads is what I consider a profit producing activity. By implementing these 5 critical tips on every call, you’ll recruit more people, sell more products and have a profitable business.

1. Schedule a time to follow up. This one is critical. Whether you want to invite them to a webinar or send them to your affiliate link, before you end the conversation, you must schedule a time to get back to them. Do not give out your website link until you have done this. If you have invited them to a webinar, schedule your follow up for a specific time right after the webinar ends. If you want them to watch a video on your website, be sure to set a time to call them back or have them watch it while on the phone with them! Just do not leave it open to anytime or whenever. You must give your prospect a sense of urgency. If you don’t have a sense of urgency neither will your prospect. I assure you that your prospect will not take you seriously unless they know you are calling them back. To be a leader you must act like one and top producers always set a follow up time.

2. Use your prospects name. People love to hear their name in the conversation. They tend to listen more closely because the conversation is more personable. Using their name makes them feel connected to you and your prospect will not feel like you have had this same conversation with 10 other people that day.

3. Let the tools sell. Today with streaming videos, dynamic websites and live online webinars, you do not have to sell your product or business opportunity. The videos and sales pages do that for you. All you have to do is build relationships and rapport then send them to your affiliate link or get them on a webinar. The leaders in your company who have created these videos, sales pages or host the webinars will do the selling. You just need to make friends. Something we have been doing since we were kids.

4. Ask more questions and talk less. So many times have we been on the phone with a “salesperson” who just talks and talks and talks. We hardly get to say anything. If you are talking and talking and talking when you call your leads, they are not listening and are just trying to think of a way to get you off the phone. People want to buy, they do not want to be sold. You need to get to know your prospect first. Find out what their needs are; what their problems are. In order to find that out, you need to ask good, quality questions. Asking questions creates rapport with your prospect. They feel you genuinely want to help find a solution to their problem. Once you have discovered their problem or frustration, offer them the solution by sending them to your website or a scheduled webinar.

5. Keep the conversation short. Again you are creating a sense of urgency. By keeping the conversation short, you give the appearance of being a professional, successful and busy person. Besides, you have more prospects to call and you don’t have time to spend an hour on the phone with one.

One last point about calling leads. You need to make it fun. It should not be something you are afraid of or neglect to do. Despite all the available technologies today, network marketing is still a people business. People join people, they don’t join companies. Reach out to your prospects and make a friend. If they don’t buy, that’s okay, you never know where the relationship will lead. Maybe they even have a referral they can send to you.
