Independent Contractor - How to Start

Published on 8/26/2015
For additional information  Click Here

Hello dear readers! For those of you that have been following my blog, you will see that I am always talking about being an independent contractor and self employed. Some of the questions that I have been getting quite frequently are the basic "How do I get started?!" questions. To be fair, I'm sure I probably should have started with that information before showing off many of the different programs and websites that offer self-employment work.

As always, I always recommend that you do your own research! If you are using the almighty Google, some search keywords are "freelancer opportunities", "independent contractor opportunities", and "self-employment start up". Once you can weed through the results that will most benefit you, you will want to consider if working from home or outside of the home is right for you. Some people will thrive in an "at-home" environment, but it does take incredible discipline and determination to find the business that is right for you.

There are a few essential questions that you want to ask yourself when you first decide to become your own boss?

#1: What kind of work/home balance am I looking for?

One of the biggest reasons that I hear time and time again for people to work from home is that it gives you a better work/life balance. Stay at home moms/dads love this option, especially when the kids are back to school and there are less distractions in the home. It also gives students a chance to work around a hectic college schedule and work part-time with less of a commute cost.

#2: Am I able to dedicate a distraction free environment in my home?

This point is very important, especially if you decide to take up telecommunting. Having a noise-free background will be all important when speaking with your customers. Even if you are not spending time on the phone, you will need to have a committed atmosphere to help be sure that you stay on task to meet all goals.

#3: What kind of opportunities fit my lifestyle?

Some people actually prefer a 9-5 schedule where others prefer to be able to pick and choose their own hours. Not everyone has the same preference because we all have different life styles. There are plenty of  different companies that will allow you to come on as an independent contractor to set your own hours or as an employee where they will assign hours to you depending on business need. Whichever you choose, you want to be able to make sure that you can commit to a schedule that will allow you to keep that cherished home/life balance.

#4: Will I be able to be resourceful enough to learn processes and troubleshoot equipment on my own?

One of the toughest things you can learn is how to be resourceful with your information and troubleshoot your office equipment. All technology has the potential to fail at one time or another, so be sure that you know how to back up files on your computer, have the phone number to your internet service provider handy, and ask for help from experts when you need it. Some failures cannot be avoided so there should be steps to a solution in place so that your productivity does not take a large hit.

These are just a few of the basic questions that you want to ask yourself before quitting at your brick and mortar position. Working from home is a great option, and one people are turning to more and more! Still, there are some people that would prefer to have the office setting where they can be productive outside of their haven of a home. Consider carefully, and always do your own research!

Until next time!

As always, thank you for reading! Please share with your network, friends and family!
