The first and most obvious thing to consider is that you must keep your thoughts focused on what you want and avoid thinking about what you dont want. Its very hard to achieve goals when your mind is cluttered with negative or distracting thoughts. Even now as you're reading this article, I am sure there are other thoughts passing through your mind. It's often the case that only 50% of our attention is directed to the task at hand. Making it almost impossible to be fully absorbed in anything you do 100%.
There is a term called "Intention-Manifestation". It is used to get the things you want using thought power. In other words what you think about most is what you get. Anyone who's attempted intention manifestation can attest to the difficulty of staying focused. A good solution to this problem is to build mental discipline or your ability to stay focused on whatever it is you want to think about.
These are some useful tips to keep your thoughts focused on what you want and away from what you don't want.
1) Give up T.V. Especially news programs. This way you can start blocking sources that flood your mind with thoughts of things you don't want. It's a prime killer of positive intentions. You will also notice that your thinking will become a lot more focused.
2) Try to focus your attention 100% on the task at hand a few times per day, without thinking about the end result. When exercising focus on the current muscle group that you are training. When you are eating focus on smell, taste, texture etc. When driving focus on controlling the car. Always staying in the present moment. Do not think about what you have to do at the end of the workout, or after you finish eating or even about the driving destination or reason for going. Not only will your concentration improve, but another benefit is that this will keep your mind off any would-be negative thoughts that might creep in while you're not "paying attention". You see, if your thinking about the weights you're lifting you know you're not accidentally thinking about financial lack.
3) Create a relaxing workspace. This helps reduce stress, which makes it easier to concentrate on what you desire, instead of what you don't. A clutter-free environment is important, since the sight of clutter can trigger distracting thoughts. Even photographs should be out of sight if they tend to distract you when you look at them.
4) Setting aside some time for conscious intending. Increasing the amount of time your spend thinking about your intentions is very beneficial. Start with 20-30 minutes per day and think about what you want. Pick a few intentions & let your imagination create mental pictures of it for a while, try to FEEL the end result.
5) Recreation. Even simple recreation is helpful because it keeps you focused on something positive, which at least helps prevent thinking about fear or worry. Although you're not thinking about what you want, you're not putting any mental energy on fueling your problems.
Even if you're skeptical about the power of intention, It shouldn't be hard to see that a focused and disciplined mind has its benefits. I've found that in order to improve my life, I've had to put a lot of effort into disciplining my mind. I consider this time well spent, regardless of the outcome.
