Things that I have learned about direct sales:
1. Never say never!! Its always worth a try because the worst that will happen is that somebody will say no..... but eventually somebody will say yes!
2. The only way to fail in this type of work is to not bother showing up... I really do believe that even if you have a home party or an event that does not make the sales you were expecting or has a lack of customers, it provides an opportunity to network, get new ideas, and to receive/provide feedback.
3. Be open to try new things! you know the old saying about the definition of "insanity"? insanity is doing the same thing over and over again but expecting different results... keep your mind open to different approaches and venues because it just MAY work!
4. Do your best to pay it forward. In every aspect of my life, I always try to treat people with kindness and consideration no matter how they treat me in return. Remember that we have not walked in that person's shoes and have no idea what happened previously that day, week, or year to that individual. Sometimes one random act of kindness can help to pick someone up and you never know when you will need that favor in return!
5. Don't take it personally! in this business, you need to learn how to handle negative comments and feedback. but its all good in the end! this is what we need to grow and learn as business owners and individuals in general! its so easy to take it personally but keep in mind if you provided the best service possible it probably is NOT about you as a person! Negative thoughts lead to negative actions!!
6. Be gracious and appreciate others! too often in our society, we become preoccupied with what we don't have or who has it better.... sometimes we forget to appreciate all that we DO have!
These are some of the important points that I have learned about myself as an independent consultant of four different companies. Some of these may hit home for you and others may not apply at all! I just wanted to share what I have experienced in case others may relate! Wishing all of you the best of luck in all of your endeavors!! :)
