"Man born of woman is of few days and full of trouble. He springs up like a flower and withers away; like a fleeting shadow, he does not endure. Do you fix your eye on such a one? Will you bring him before you for judgment? Who can bring what is pure from the impure? No one! Man's days are determined; you have decreed the number of his months and have set limits he cannot exceed. So look away from him and let him alone, till he has put in his time like a hired man. ~Job 14:1-6 NIV
Job became acutely aware of his limits. Through a series of intense problems, he learned that life was short and fragile. His comparisons to shadows and flowers were remarkably similar to those found in Isaiah 40 and Psalm 102.
He reminded God about these limits, contending that "there is hope for a tree" (v. 7); in contrast, "man expires, and where is he?" (v. 10) This gave Job a sense of hopelessness. Filled with despair, he saw life as a "struggle" and pleaded for mercy.
The Bible reminds us that we all have limits and that life is short. But this doesn't mean that we should feel hopeless. Instead, we should turn to God, be grateful, and realize that we can have eternal life! We should think about eternity, not the temporary things of this world.
As he faced his limits, David asked, "O LORD, what is man, that You take knowledge of him?" He realized that our "days are like a passing shadow" and declared, "How blessed are the people whose God is the LORD!" (Psalm 144)
When we realize our limits, we're driven to seek God. With David, we cry out "O LORD, be not far off; O You my help, hasten to my assistance" (Psalm 22:19). We plead, "Make haste to help me, O Lord, my salvation!" (Psalm 38:22)
When you think about your limits, use these as opportunities to seek God. Think about eternity, rather than the temporary things of this world. Remember: You can trust your life to God.
