The Family's Shock Absorber
Another day that I received a call from dear hubby saying that he needed to calm down before he tore someone's head off.
Another day that I received a call saying that he had to calm down and get his head back together, so he wouldn't do something stupid and he could have a better day.
And don't forget about those times that one of the kids wants to do something or wants to buy something, and they will come to me so that I can break it to "Dad" or ask him for whatever they feel they must have at this moment in time. But they want me to be the one to tell Dad because they don't want him to get upset with them.
And then, of course, how about the times when something in the home stops working or something comes up with the finances, or however many other things may go haywire and I am the one that has to break the news to the rest of the family.
I am truly the family's "shock absorber".
It is true that a women's work is never done, but I never thought of myself as a "shock absorber" before.
However, as hubby continued to go over his day and on ocassion would start to get wound up again, I found myself just as I seem to always be doing, stroking his ego, calming his ruffled feathers or just plain changing the subject to keep him from blowing up again.
By the end of the end of the call, I had managed once again to calm him down and change his prospective on things.
I must admit that there are times when I may not be able to hang in there and "kiss all the booboos" and make things all better, I too, am only human and will let things get the best of me more times than I should.
However, the majority of the time, I succeed in the task that I seem to have had bestowed upon me by everyone in the family.
HOWEVER, after going through whatever may be causing the friction at the moment, I feel like a old worn out rope in which both ends are frazzled.
So, the question is now: How do I put myself back together?
Just like as a mom, I am not aloud to get sick, I am not aloud to let things get to me. I must always be prepared for the next fire that has to be put out.
So, I have pinned myself with another "Medal of Honor" so to speak.
"FAMILY SHOCK ABSORBER"
along with wife, mother, friend, teacher, nurse, housekeeper, cook, seamstress, chauffer, and the list could go on forever.
Sometimes I would just like to say "STOP" world and let me off!
Too bad I don't get paid for what I do.
RIGHT?????? All you wife and mother's out there.
I could go onto speak about many different aspects of being the so called "glue" that holds the family together, but that would definitely become a book and not a blog.
In closing, if you happen to see yourself as the "family's shock absorber", then make sure to tell your family to put on their seatbelts, because the road may get a little bumpy from time to time, when mom's shocks start to wear thin on ocassion.
