The Crucial Often Neglected Marketing Component

The reason we are in business is to offer products and services to those who need them, and to benefit both personally and financially by doing so. The reasons we chose to enter the business arena instead of, or perhaps in addition to, another  line of work are as unique as we are as individuals. Whatever the reason, the rate of our success is dependent on some basic common factors.

We are all aware (sometimes painfully) of the varying scale of achievement by different individuals in the ability to produce a successful marketing campaign and move products and sell services. One may work as hard as, or harder than, another with less or no results. This can be frustrating because we are taught to be believe that if we work hard we will be successful. In most career endeavors this may be the case, but results are more realistically measured and obvious in the marketing world. As independent marketers we can not fake our mistakes or blame a coworker, and our livelihood depends on our producing results, not on a guaranteed pay check at the end of the week.

Whatever you are promoting it is almost certain there are others competing for the same market share that you are. And if you have an in demand product or service you can be sure that some of those are corporate giants! In order to get consumers to buy from you today and not the competition you must stand out from the crowd. You must have something to offer that the other guy does not. This, I believe, is one of the most often neglected marketing components.

There are several means of accomplishing this. You may be able to offer higher quality, lower prices, a more encompassing or longer guarantee, and strive to provide better customer service. However many of your competitors may still be one step ahead of you. What you need is a hook. What I mean is something that will grab your potential customers attention, something that gets them emotionally involved in the buying process and eager to hit that order button or pull out that credit card and do business with you.
