Do you know the difference between bureaucratic time and entrepreneurial time? Knowing the difference could be what keeps you going!

Most people are used to the traditional method of being paid for the number of hours worked. You work a day; you get paid for a day. You work a month; you get paid for a month. You work a year; you get paid for a year. It makes sense to us, even though many times we are not happy with the amount we are earning.

And then you start a business in network marketing, and here’s what happens. You work a day; you get paid $0. You work a week; you might get paid a little. You work a few months and still get paid a little. You don’t understand this! You are working hard doing everything you’re supposed to be doing. You begin to think network marketing doesn’t work. It might work for some people, but they must be special or just lucky. Family and friends might start telling you that you are wasting your time. This is the stage where many people start to give up or quit altogether.

But, what if we knew that our business growth wasn’t supposed to look like that in network marketing? Network marketing just doesn’t work that way, and if that’s what you expected, you are going to be disappointed. Unrealistic expectations are a major reason people quit. With unrealistic expectations, we may think its not working when it really is! This is both a bad news/good news situation. The bad news is in network marketing, we will never get to the place where we get paid in direct proportion to the amount of work we put in. And that’s the good news as well!

When you work a network marketing business, you have entered a different time zone. You are now operating in the entrepreneurial time zone. Let’s look at the 3 stages:

Stage 1: The “It’s Not Worth It” stage. This is where everyone starts out. You’re working hard, but you aren’t making a lot of money. This stage can go on for many, many months while you are laying the foundation of your business and building a downline. Unfortunately, many people give up during this stage. They think it is taking too long. It’s not worth all the time they are putting in, and they quit. Well what can you do to get you through stage 1? First, just knowing it exists helps. Know that you are in a different time zone and believe you are going to be one of the people that sees it through. Know your compensation plan, and make a plan to get where you want to be. Success is more about tenacity than talent.

Stage 2: The “It’s Worth It” stage. You have been building your business for awhile and you are making a decent income. You might even get to the point where you are making enough money to quit your day job. The biggest danger in Stage 2 is that many people slow down and start losing their momentum. You need that momentum if you ever want to get to Stage 3. Your momentum is fragile. Your business isn’t mature enough to slow down. If you don’t have enough members on your team, you may even start moving backwards.

Stage 3: The “I’m Not Worth This Much! stage. You’ve arrived! At this point you’re going to be really glad you’re not paid in bureaucratic time for the amount of time you’re working. Network marketing leverages the actions of many people. If you have persevered and built a big team, at some point in this process there are so many members in action, the results are explosive. You can enjoy the fruits of your labor and “retire” if you choose.

So the question is: Are you willing to pay the price now to achieve your dreams later?

Excellent blog about new words to describe the networking spirit to believe enough in free enterprise to work for nothing but the price of a dream...like pioneers crossing the plains. What a feeling when you do arrive...priceless

Thanks for the comments. Unrealistic expectations can really be a problem for some network marketers. They think they sign up and send a check and then the company immediately starts sending them checks as well. It takes work.

A wonderful explanation of the differences between traditional employment and being an independent business owner, Dawn. In my mind people have incorrect expectations ... your article is masterful in clarifying what the entrepreneurial mindset looks like. Of course, the power of the internet is its ability to compress time and space allowing for greater results in a shorter time span, so I hope people will chose to keep working toward Stage 3! Thanks, Dawn.
