Work Place Bullying When is it OK? Never!! In Australia our occupational, health and safety legislation make it the responsibility of both the employer and employee to make every reasonable effort to ensure the work place is safe for all. In almost every job interview and application you will be asked about your understanding of OH&S.
The bigger an organisation gets the more important it is to have processes and procedures in place to enable reporting to occur if an employee feels something is not right. It is also important to have backwards reporting process to ensure that everyone is aware of what is going on if something is reported.
These processes, although meant to help all involved, often are for management to cover themselves by appearing to do everything in their power, but in reality they do nothing more than dot the i’s and cross the t’s and to show that they are doing a wonderful job.
A recent personal incident proved to me that the larger the organisation, the more people hide behind procedures rather than supporting their staff.
In my case, I am a professional fire fighter and I take my job very seriously both when fighting fires, attending road accidents, etc and in also pulling my weight around the station during the down times. I recently made a point to another fire fighter about the security of our station, to which he took offence and not once but twice pushed me against a wall in his frustration. What I find ironic in this situation is that he felt a greater urge to assault me than to close and lock and exit door. It may seem like a minor issue but if everyone takes responsibility for their actions then these types of issues would not even happen.
I reported the incident through official channels, and officer after officer hand balled it to another officer and ultimately since no one else saw the incident and the other fire fighter denied my account of the incident on multiple times, nothing was done. All the officers hid behind procedures and told me they had done everything they could. The only thing they did not do was to support me. Why would I make up something like this? What purpose would that serve? Why do we even have a reporting system if nothing is going to be done?
I felt grossly unsupported by an organisation that I risk my life for and that preaches team work, discipline, safety and professionalism. It is no wonder that people get discouraged and become apathetic in large organisations.
I have only been a member of this organisation for the last six years and truly love the job and what I am able to give back to the community but I have also built my own businesses working for myself for more than twenty years. People are the most valuable asset to any organisation and my businesses would not have got off the ground if I did not treat each of my employees in an open and honest way. I have never hid behind processes and procedures and never intend to do so. I know if I put in the effort in my own business I get the rewards. I know if I do a good job I get the praise from clients and employees. I also know if I cross the line it is me who has to face the consequences. I am quickly learning that in big businesses / organisations the name of the game is to cover your behind first. This is the disappointing reality of our society at large.
I can only hope that by taking a stance on this issue that it may highlight some of the flaws in the system, but I am not holding my breath. Yours in Success,
Dean Howell
