                         Probiotics V/ Prebiotics

   Two similar words yet very different meaning.
Our health depends on how healthy our gut is kept,everything start
there from good absorption of nutrients and minerals? to reach the blood supply  and nourish the billions of cells.
Our colon houses over a thousand types of bacteria but believe it or not our gut is a very healthy organ and it does what is suppose to do efficiently.

     Now what is a probiotic ?They are live bacteria found in yogurt and dairy foods and it is also sold in a pill form as well it must be kept cold to stay alive,because they are very delicate and do not stand heat well ,stomach acid and are short lived.They have to compete with over a thousand species that already colonizes our gut.
  Then what is prebiotic?is a beneficial plant fiber that nourishes the good bacteria already present in the large bowel or the colon.
Our body itself does not digest plant fibers instead it uses the fibers to promote  good bacteria growth in the gut witch provides digestive and other general health benefits.
       Prebiotics unlike probiotics in powder form are more resistant and are not destroyed by heat , cold ,stomach acid,time or bacteria,it acts like fertilizer, nourishes the good bacteria.
     Probiotics are found in yogurt,dairy,fermented dairy products and for people with dairy sensitivities they have to opt for a pill form,prebiotics on the other end they are found in vegetables like jerusalem artichokes,onions,garlic,chicory,  bananas and apple skin but because it exists in minute amounts in these food and our daily intake is 25 grams its hard to consume an extreme large amount of these foods to get the daily recommended fiber allowence.Most of all both probiotics and prebiotics are very important for us to have a balanced gut flora.
