15. Build Green Now. (No Excuses!)
Here is the impact of our buildings on energy consumption, CO2 emissions, and the like (from Green Building A to Z, by Jerry Yudelson):
Share of total energy used by buildings: 39%
Share of electricity used by buildings: 68%
Share of carbon-dioxide emissions caused by buildings: 40%
Share of raw materials used in buildings: 30%
In terms of energy efficiency/independence and minimized climatic damage, curbing the likes of SUV use is of course controversial. "Green building" should not/need not be! The opportunity is huge, and the payback period is relatively short. A host of approaches have been proven. The process is motivating. And you can get started more or less tomorrow in old buildings as well as new.

| | |  | | I am not a greenie per say. I believe that we should protect the earth keep it clean, and not do anything to hurt, harm, or danger it for the next generation. I am not an extremist in worshiping it. You are absolutely correct in that we can change the little stupid things we do to hurt ourselves and/or the atmosphere. |
