The History and Life of Alaska King Crab

Prized for it's Snow White leg and body meat, it has a sweet and rich flavor and tender texture. Unmatched in size, quality and appearance, Alaska King crab is one of the most sought after of all the Alaska crab species.

Moisture is locked in by the slight red membrane over the meat. Alaska King Crabs average 6 to 10 pounds, individual legs and claws are available in clusters or claws. Korean Cooks buy and start with fresh whole crabs.

Red and brown/golden KIng Crab are widely available Worldwide and in U.S. Markets. In the Glory days of Kodiak and Pribilof Island areas of King Crab fishing, large 15-pound red and blue crabs were caight. Due to mostly significately lower catches since the 1980's these fisheries were closed.

The Scarlet King Crab isn't as well know as others nor fished commercially because it is smaller and harder to find. Did you know? Alaska KIng Crab is a good source of high quality and naturally low in fat and calories. The perfect addition to any recipe or table.

Japan began commercial King Crab fishing activity in the 1940's Post World War ll. Harvest of King Crab in Dutch Harbor peaked at 33 million pounds (14,969 metric tons). The Secretary of Commerce implements and adopts a plan banning foreign fishing in the Bering Sea.

In the new rationalized program implemented in 2005...250 boats land 14 million pounds of Red King Crab in four days. Populations of King Crab in the Barents Sea have risen ten times in the past ten years, now estimated at 20 million crabs. In 2006, approximately 90% of the crab in the world was Russian King Crab.
