Social Media, The Numbers Game and Marketing by Don Sabelhaus
“Social media includes web-based and mobile technologies used to turn communication into interactive dialogue. Andreas Kaplan and Michael Haenlein define social media as "a group of Internet-based applications that build on the ideological and technological foundations of Web 2.0, and that allow the creation and exchange of user-generated content." Social media is media for social interaction as a super-set beyond social communication. Enabled by ubiquitously accessible and scalable communication techniques, social media has substantially changed the way organizations, communities, and individuals communicate.”
That long winded definition from Wikipedia is a pretty good summary of the many definitions of social media. When looking for a definitive definition of the term “the numbers game” I was amazed at the variety of definitions for the term. For the purposes of this article I chose the following from the Cambridge dictionary: the use of numbers to represent facts in an argument, especially when it makes people believe things that are not true.
The numbers game carries a negative tone to it, and therefore marketers do not generally like it to be associated with their industry. The facts however speak for themselves. Online marketing today is moving more towards social media networking, and the numbers game is in play.
Not only has online marketing presented a global opportunity, it has also increased your competitors exponentially. To grasp the emerging importance of social media all one must do is look at the big national and global brands and their presence on networks such as Facebook and Twitter. They take great effort to promote their brand on these social media networks and encourage you to like and follow their brand.
To illustrate the importance of the numbers I offer this simple example: brand A has 100,000 followers on Twitter and 125,000 likes on Facebook. Brand B has 10,000 followers on Twitter and 11,000 likes on Facebook. Now what is you’re your first impression? I rest my case, the numbers tell the story.

 | | Bill, once again my friend I have to thank you for visiting the way back machine and posting this. Thank you all for the comments, they are much appreciated. |
| | | | | Liked and shared for my friend Don |
| | | | | Don, thanks for the wonderful information.. |
| | | | | What you shared a year ago continues to gather momentum, Don. It is nice to know that the law of large numbers does not preclude some from knowing some of those folks better than others. And I am glad to know you, my friend. Thank you for you insights. |
| | | | | One year later I thought I'd give our Featured Member of the Day a fresh "bump" on a worthy post that others might get to take a look. Social Media has - just in the last year - had Lot's of changes. This year should be even more. |
| | | | | Thank you all for commenting, the consensus seems to be the same, the verdict is still out on it, and if it will last. I've read some articles where big name brands have already abandoned FB store fronts. One thing is for sure, when FB has stockholders to keep happy, we will see some changes. |
| | | | | Understanding Social Media is a big question on marketer's minds everywhere. I believe the same things that make people go to a great blog site will also bring people to your "Fanpage" or Twitter Home -great, pertinent content! Like everything else, media in general is constantly changing, We must adapt and be adept! |
| | | | | Reading your articles with big interesting eyes :)) An other good article to share.

| | | | | Plus...Social media is a great place for interaction, but so far actual dollars and cents and "monitization" from Social Media isn't there yet. |
| | | | | Some good information Don. I just read a "white paper" by Forester Research on Social Media Marketing, Marketing Channels, and click path of people and how the purchased hard goods and soft goods. The top two where Organic Search, and email. With "other channels" with social media ending up <1% of sales from research on 1000's of companies.

| | | | | Hey Don, Social Media is the hottest thing going, I guess the next question is how long will it last!
|
| | | | | Thanks for commenting David, God bless! |
| | | | | Great content Don - keep up the good work. |
| | | | | Thank you for commenting my friend, it means a great deal to me. |
| | | | | Don, you have struck gold yet again with your insights. |
