Oh, Our Excellent Adventure

Harvard, Oh Harvard

Our visit with Dr. Lant had many high points. And there were some very special moments that occurred that were not expected.

These are the moments that I will most remember because it is Dr. Lant himself, who taught me how to fine tune my powers of observation. I have told Dr. Lant many times that his most poignant tool in his craft was his acute ability to pull meaning from almost meaningless situations to the untrained eye. Dr. Lant taught me that every moment has a meaning and a message. And those messages could range from a tender flower petal falling gently to the ground. From the vivacious colors of the simplest flower crying out to make itself known. Even to the whistling of the cold winter wind on the coldest wintry night. These are the details we so often miss. But not Dr. Lant. The acuteness of his eye is so ever present, watching, gazing, even on the slightest twitch of a muscle or an eye. My teacher, my friend, Dr. Lant was about to take me on a journey I had not expected.

We exited the car from across the street from the rear gate and followed slowly behind Dr. Lant and Kris, Sandy was ahead of me and just behind them when it hit me and caused me to stop dead in my tracks.   Here I stood, at the rear gate of one of the, if not the most prestigious universities in the country. As I stood there I had to take a picture because I could feel the ambience of wisdom and knowledge vibrating at the gate. I stood there motionless looking at every curvature of the massive metal gate and the building just behind it. Yes, this was going to be a special tour that only Dr. Lant could usher in. As we walked slowly across the yard something magical happened for me. As I listened to Dr. Land explain what each and every building was, I began to see it as he must have seen it years before. I began to see Harvard through the eyes of Dr. Lant and it was glorious. We walked further into the yard and there were people everywhere. Chairs down, students wearing their caps and gowns moving to the lower section of the yard. We knew the actual graduation was not until Wednesday and we wondered what was going on.

Dr. Lant sat softly in one of the chairs. He was staring so distantly at what was going on. And as he looked, I saw what he saw, through his eyes. Suddenly a soft tear began to flow down Dr. Lant's face and he began to speak to us about all the memories he had of Harvard Yard. Yes this was the place, this was a distant point in time some years ago but Dr. Lant was reliving it and we were there with him. As we furthered our journey through the yard it seemed as if Dr. Lant was not going to be able to continue this long walk. But there in the yard was the statue of John Harvard ( Image of Statue) and everyone was trying to take a picture with it. A picture to say that exclaimed to the World, I.. Was.. Here! And as Dr. Lant remembered the 1st time he viewed this place, I saw it also, through his eyes and we were both strengthened. Leaving the yard outside the gate I found a bench and sat down. Dr. Lant comes from behind me   with he and my wife, Sandy. arm in arm.

He stops for the briefest moment and looks me in the eye. And in this moment we both know that this was a perfect place for us. We came, we saw, Harvard, great Harvard. Dr. Lant had showed it to us and we understood. In this perfect moment, we were One.
