Sarongs are not just for the beach. Millions of women and men wear sarongs daily all over the world.
In Oman, sarongs are called wizaar and are often white in color. In Saudi Arabia, sarongs are known as izaar. In India in the state of Manipur, they are called phanek and in the South Indian states of Kerala, they are called mundu (if fully white or fully black) and lungi or kaili if colored. Sarongs are very common in Sri Lanka, and worn only by men. A similar garment is worn by women. However, the women's garment is not called a sarong but a redda', which is wraparound skirt.
In North America and Europe, hip wraps are worn as beach wear, or as a cover-up over swimwear. The wrap is often made of a thin, light fabric, often rayon, and may feature decorative fringing on both sides. They may also have ties, which are long thin straps of fabric which the wearer can tie together to prevent the wrap from falling down. These wraps are almost exclusively worn by women, and do not usually resemble a traditional African or Asian sarongs. They do not resemble traditional sarongs as used in Africa or Asia, neither in size, pattern or design.
But like I said, sarongs are not just for the beach anymore. Depending how how you tie your sarong, you can wear it as a skirt or dress. The most popular sarongs purchased in the States and Europe are made in Hawaii and Bali. These sarongs have vivid colors, elegant designs and usually made of a lightweight material.
The sarongs from Sarongs4u.com are made from 100% rayon. We carry a wide variety of colors and designs. So if you're looking for great value, beautiful designs and an assortment of colors, check out Sarongs4u. Tie on one of ours. You'll love the way you look!
