Is a Work at Home Business Really For You?

With the economic outlook still uncertain and many people still losing jobs around the world there are many turning to home business ideas as a possible escape from dependence on employment and a potential means of future security.

Challenges facing home businesses
As with any business a home business has its challenges to overcome, challenges such as overcoming competition, establishing a customer base, business expenses and more. There are also some not quite so obvious challenges which tend not to get considered until they arise.
Two of these really should be considered in advance so I'm going to spell them out in the hope you'll consider them before you leap into the great home business idea you've just come up with.

The particular challenges I'm thinking of are the ones of maintaining your motivation and that of fitting the business into your family life. These are not small issues! They are very real and need to be thought about before you get started on the other challenges.

Motivational ideology
Maintaining motivation while working on your own is harder than you might think. Most of us are social animals more suited to working in team environments, we tend to work best that way and often just having a colleague to brainstorm with can spur us to great things. The lack of face to face contact with others can be tough until you get used to it, some never do and find themselves wanting to get back into employment for that reason alone. Another motivation problem can arise with the weather, yes when it's sunny outside and the beach looking good it's hard to resist temptation and easy to waste time.

Adding home business to a family
Fitting a home business into the family routine can also be a challenge, particularly if you have young children at home. They don't understand that mom or dad has to be left alone to get on with the business, they just see you there and available to play with. Similarly if your partner needs help with household chores they are going to find it hard to resist asking you to help. You can help this situation a little if you have a separate office rather than a corner of the house but you'll still have those regular interruptions and distractions.

Planning your home businesses
So before you start planning your home business from a purely financial perspective, have a think about these issues. Are you really the work at home type and how are your family going to live with the business under their feet, you'll be better prepared than most when those issues arise.
