Career consultants recommend that you build and expand your skills during periods of unemployment.
Here are some of their tips to increase your employment quotient:
1. Volunteer. It shows you have character, integrity and like to help…money isn’t the most important thing.
2. Start your own business…if you have the money and time to do that. You may also learn skills that are transferrable if you do end up working for someone else again.
3. Start a professional blog to show you have knowledge and passion to step above the ordinary.
4. Make connections. Build and expand your network of contacts through social media and professional organizations. Let friends, family and professional contacts know that you’re looking for a job.
5. Use key words in your resumes. Did you know that most employers use electronic scanning devices to screen and rank candidates? Make sure you use specific words from the job posting so that it will come up higher in employer searches.
Here is my question to you as a former employee, new retiree and entrepreneur.
How interested are you to volunteer, blog, go to class, or find a temporary job to prove to some manager that you are a good, honest, dependable, industrious employee?
