Are you in sitting in an employment gap? Is unemployment a long trek to nowhere?
Do you think a long gap in employment affects your chances to be hired? Do you believe that there is a negative stigma to being unemployed? Is there something you can do to improve your hiring desirability?
More than 40% of unemployed job seekers have been out of work for six months or longer.
94% of employers said they wouldn’t have a lower opinion of a candidate who took on a position during the recession that was at a lower level than the one he or she had held previously.
79% of employers are sympathetic to those who actively pursue activities to show you are still actively developing their skill sets.
61% of hiring managers recommend taking a class. It shows you are serious about your work and that you take initiative.
The reality is many employers worry that job seekers are losing some of their skills because they haven’t been utilizing them.
However, you can improve your chances for employment if you show employers that you have kept your skills and are ready to join the work force and get your hourly wages.
Career consultants recommend that you build and expand your skills during periods of unemployment.
Here are some of their tips to increase your employment quotient:
1. Volunteer. It shows you have character, integrity and like to help…money isn’t the most important thing.
2. Start your own business…if you have the money and time to do that. You may also learn skills that are transferrable if you do end up working for someone else again.
3. Start a professional blog to show you have knowledge and passion to step above the ordinary.
4. Make connections. Build and expand your network of contacts through social media and professional organizations. Let friends, family and professional contacts know that you’re looking for a job.
5. Use key words in your resumes. Did you know that most employers use electronic scanning devices to screen and rank candidates? Make sure you use specific words from the job posting so that it will come up higher in employer searches.
Here is my question to you as a former employee, new retiree and entrepreneur.
How interested are you to volunteer, blog, go to class, or find a temporary job to prove to some manager that you are a good, honest, dependable, industrious employee?
