A really interesting question, isn't it?
When I first saw that line, my mind instantly started looking for the most common attributes I thought that all successful people have, like passion and desire and drive.... then I realized that those characteristics weren't necessarily the key to success in business.
Let's examine a few: Luck? Lots of existing capital to invest? Genius? A natural intellect for business acumen? Good education? Personality? Good looks? Guts? Drive? Hard-work?
I for one, believe the latter three things are actually the most common traits among successful entrepreneurs and businessmen.
Two examples from previous experience: Neil is very intelligent, has lots of money, but lacks the motivational drive. Jim is very hard-working, innovative, and driven but he was not born rich nor was he top of the class. Which one is more successful today?... Jim.
There are loads of other examples of people like this in business Take the likes of Bill Gates or Richard Branson, - neither had the most obvious starting path to become a millionaire. Most people do not have an easy ride to success.
Successful people are not born lucky. They create their own luck - by seeking opportunities, going beyond what they are required to do, taking risks, trying new things, believing in their own ideas and themselves and developing close relationships with others who shared their vision.
We all know that once you have become somewhat successful, it's easier to become more successful because you have more capital, you have proved yourself so you have more belief from those around you who are willing to assist and support you. But this is not the reason they continue to be successful or became successful in the first place. The reason they are and remain successful is because they maintain a hardworking, innovative, and determined attitude to succeed further. The road to success is not easy.
So what should you be doing to pave your own road to success? Perhaps it's a good idea to start by asking yourself: Are you creating your own luck? Or are you just expecting some amazing opportunity to drop at your feet with step-by-step directions? If you're in the latter category, you should seriously consider a rethink and start a new motivational plan.
Consider people that have made it - How did they do it? Keep up to date what is happening in your industry. New consumer and industry trends could offer the source of inspiration that you need to make it.
Ultimately, believe in yourself and remember anyone (including you) can make it - but it doesn't come easily - you have to work hard and create your own opportunities.
Remember... good ideas mean nothing if you don't take action and turn them into reality!
