Secret of success
If there is no secret of success in professional or business life, as some eminently successful men have stated, how does it come about that, of two men apparently equally gifted, one succeeds while the other does not. The great truth lies in this: thousands of men never realize their own potentiality. Certain dormant powers that lie within them are never awakened to life. The electric spark that would start the personal engine into life never touches the vital energizing power.
" Genius," said Edison, "is one per cent inspiration and ninety-nine per cent perspiration." Although some may take leave to doubt the absolute truth of this, like other aphorisms, it contains a great deal of truth.
The word Edison might have used more fitly is "Imagination," not... Inspiration," which suggests something outside us, some influence breathed into a man's soul from a source outside of him. Imagination, on the other hand, is a personal attribute, an attribute which, more often than not, lies dormant in the majority of men. To arouse the imagination in an individual may be likened to the act of "conversion" common in evangelical phraseology. The imagination is suddenly awakened and we see things we had not seen before, or had not seen in the same light.
New ideas
To see things in a new light is a great realization; it is the electric spark touching our minds; a fire is lit, the conflagration follows as a matter of course. We get a train of new ideas. As a "converts" whole outlook is changed, so it is in the sphere of mental activity, and in the humdrum life of the individual, whose imagination is dormant, when he suddenly realizes something he had never realized before, or had but vaguely realized. The material is there in the minds of thousands of young men, an inert mass waiting some great dynamic that will break it up and set free latent forces which, springing into being like a hundred searchlights, reveal to the mind visions undreamed before.
In business, as in everything else, imagination is the first thing. The politician has to form an image in his mind of a policy to meet some contingency looming ahead; the scientist has to form in his mind some hypothesis to account for some phenomenon that he cannot as yet decisively explain; the novelist in turn conjures up in his mind the actions of some imaginary persons in imagined circumstances.

Imagination, far from being the plaything of poets, fiction writers and dreamers, can and should be the most practical handmaid of the young business man. It is by imagination we learn what is lacking, and by it we search out schemes to fill the wants; in other words, it is by imagination that we create opportunities for ourselves, and that is the one essential thing to create opportunities. It may be only in little things, or in doing things better, or differently than before. Old ideas can be given a new form which may prove to be as invaluable as a brand new idea.
The complaints of the men who are failures have always one thing in common lack of opportunity. It does not occur to them that opportunities have more often than not to be created. Nature may have gifted you with natural endowments, but they will lie idle if you have not the imagination to make use of them. It is by the use of imagination that ideas originate." Imagination is the initial cause of nearly everything. A whole series of ideas may result from one thing attempted and done. Imagination is the architect of business, small and great alike. By exercising your imagination you will find it becomes a drill-ground for ideas.
