Spring Forward! All Fun Post, Enjoy!
In many parts of the world, people turn their clocks ahead an hour in the spring and turn the clocks back in the fall. We 'Spring Forward' and we "Fall Back'. The purpose of resetting our clocks is to save energy. The process is called Daylight Saving Time or DST (not Daylight Savings Time). Several years ago (2007), in the USA, we moved the time of springing forward from early April to early March and pushed back the fall resetting to take further advantage of the energy savings. Now on the second Sunday in March at 2AM, we set our clocks forward one hour. On the first Sunday in October at 2AM, our clocks will go back an hour.
Bubba does not do so well with time!
Speaking of time, my friend Bubba, a great guy but not too bright, was fascinated with time when he was a young boy. He would go around asking every one what time it was. What fascinated Bubba was that he would keep getting a different answer!
I remember one day, when Bubba came rushing in yelling "It's twenty after one! It's twenty after one!" I looked at my watch and told Bubba that it was 3:15. Bubba corrected me. "Every dog in the neighborhood is chasing that stray cat. It's twenty after one!"
I recall one Christmas, when Bubba got his first watch. I thought he would be elated, but he told me that he was disappointed. "I was told that it can tell time, but it doesn't. You have to look at it."
Extending DST earlier, and especially later, in 2007 was largely due to a 21 year push by the candy industry. They wanted it to end after Halloween night.
Benjamin Franklin is credited to be the first to have come up with the idea in 1784 when he published: "All the difficulty will be in the first two or three days; after which the reformation will be as natural and easy as the present irregularity [...] Oblige a man to rise at four in the morning, and it is more than probable he will go willingly to bed at eight in the evening; and, having had eight hours sleep, he will rise more willingly at four in the morning following." Thank you, Ben.
DST officially became law in Germany in 1916, the US followed in 1918.
For many of us on Daylight Saving Time, the best part is in the fall. That is when we set our clocks back by one hour and we gain an hour! Last night we had to set our clocks ahead and hour, so many of us feel that we have lost an hour.
Like Ben Franklin predicted, in a few short days, our bodies will adjust to our new schedule, and all will be well. In fall, we can look forward to getting our hour back!
My friends, I thank you for taking 'time' to read my post. Much success.
PS. Yesterday's post was about snow.
Knock Knock It's So cold. There's snow business like home business!
We did get about 4 inches.
