just a little icy on the road
There's no snow here in Hawaii, but it is a little icy on the road.

Getting an online home business started is a lot like driving on icy roads.  I live in the mountains of western North Carolina, so most of our icy roads are curvy and uphill or downhill.  The secret is traction.

Icy Roads

The church is close but the roads are icy.  The pub is so far, but I will walk carefully.

This was on the tonight show with Jay Leno............... Jay went into his audience to find the most embarrassing first date that a woman ever had. When the winner described her worst first date experience, there was absolutely no question as to why her tale took the prize.

Marilyn said it was midwinter... snowing and quite cold. The guy had taken her skiing to Lake Arrowhead. It was a day trip (no overnight). The outing was fun but relatively uneventful until they were headed home late that afternoon. They were driving back down the mountain when she gradually began to realize that she should not have had that extra latte. They were about an hour away from anywhere with a restroom and in the middle of nowhere. Her companion suggested she try to hold it, which she did for a while.

so icy on the road, they played hockey while waiting for tow

Unfortunately, because of the heavy snow and slow going. there came a point where she told him that he had better stop and let her pee beside the road, or she would go on the front seat of his car. They stopped and she quickly crawled out beside the car, yanked down her pants and started. Unfortunately, in the deep snow she didn't have good footing, so she let her butt rest against the rear fender to steady herself. Her companion stood at the side of the car watching for traffic and indeed was a real gentleman and refrained from peeking. All she could think about was the relief she felt despite the rather embarrassing nature of the situation.

Upon finishing however, she soon became aware of another sensation. As she bent to pull up her pants, the young lady discovered her buttock was firmly glued against the car's fender. Thoughts of tongues frozen to pump handles immediately came to mind as she attempted to disengage her flesh from the icy metal. It was quickly apparent that she had a brand new problem due to the extreme cold.

Horrified by her plight and yet aware of the humor, she answered her date's concerns about "what was taking so long" with a reply that indeed she was freezing her butt off and needed some assistance. He came around the car as she tried to cover herself with her sweater and then as she looked imploringly into his eyes, he burst out laughing she too, got the giggles and when they finally managed to compose themselves they assessed her dilemma.

Obviously, as hysterical as the situation was, they also were faced with a real problem. Both agreed it would take something hot to free her chilly cheeks from the grip of the icy metal. Thinking about what had gotten her into this predicament in the first place, both quickly realized that there was only one way to get her free so, as she looked the other way, her first time date proceeded to unzip his pants and pee her butt off the fender. As for the Tonight Show... she took the prize hands down... or perhaps that should be "pants" down.
Internet TRACTION!??
When you begin your Internet Marketing adventure, you may feel that you seem to have NO traction.  Speaking for myself, I certainly had no traction.   By  traction, I mean forward momentum

Forward momentum begins with traffic.  Traffic generates 'click throughs' and conversions.  Sounds simple, right?  And it is simple, learn to create traffic and the rest will almost take care of itself, ... but it is not necessarily easy, until now.

Affiliate Marketing:

In my humble opinion, Affiliate Marketing is the best revenue stream for a new IM.  As an affiliate marketer, you can concentrate on getting traffic which you send to your affiliates and your affiliates will do the rest.   Affiliate Marketing allows you to narrow your area of focus and learning.

Learning is the sand and the salt and the studs and the chains that will create the traction that you need. Learn all you can about traffic generation.

Quality content!

Creating poor content will ruin your traction.  It is like adding water to an icy road which will refreeze and be slicker than when you started.  Quality content makes your websites, blogs, articles, posts, PR's, etc. 'sticky'.  Your visitors will stay and return and learn to trust you.  This trust will generate clickthroughs and conversions!

Action on your part is a must.  Traction needs action.  The above works and works well, but only if you will work. Effort is a must.

Get your visitors to HELP !

There are a surprising number of simple ways to get your visitors to help you to generate traffic!??

Add a blog to your site and allow for comments, add a forum, a social site, and an article directory and encourage posts.  If you are new, add one at a time.

My amazing traffic discovery!

Do not allow SPAM...after a while.  When I first started trying to get visitors to generate content and thus help generate traffic, I got mostly SPAMMERS.

Spammers and Spam content is certainly not the kind of traffic or content that I wanted...ARGHHH!   But there a way to think outside of the box?  Can I somehow turn these lemons into lemonade?  What I came up with was to create a 'SPAM SECTION'.

I realized that these SPAMMERS were generating 'content' and links, so I temporarily allowed SPAM.  My stipulations were...SPAM was only allowed on the SPAM section and, of course, could not be vulgar, offensive, or pornographic.

The first site that I ever tried this on was a membership site (which grew to over 600k...sorry about the bragging but what I share is what I do and it WORKS!)  A funny thing was that most of my spam, spam links, and visitors were from Russia.  I got another idea in an attempt to embrace SPAM, I added a Russian language welcome area.

My latest site (Win At Losing Weight) is about 10 months old, and the SPAM Sections are now closed, but they helped me to get the traction that I needed from visitors and for free and still do.

Win At Losing Weight gets presently about 60 to 75 usable topic related posts and articles daily and around 50 comments daily and growing.  WALW is at 100K visitors per month, on its way to 1M+ per month, with application of  the above traffic leveraging.

IBO gets zillions (only slightly exaggerated-grin) of articles, posts, and comments daily...all for free!  Getting  others to help generate content and thus traffic for free is the kind of IM leverage that will propel your site's growth at rates that you never thought possible.

All my traffic is free!  Once WALW weaned from the SPAMMERS, traffic became the best that you could ask for, which is free, targeted, and organic.  Apply the above, today, and do the same for yourself.

Thank you for reading, my friends.  I wish you much success and lots of Internet TRACTION!

This IBO Press Release is brought to you by Win At Losing Weight.

The South Beach Diet (SBD) is a great diet, the South Beach Diet Supercharged (SBDS)  is even better.

If other diets have failed, consider the SBDS because of it flexibility and 20 minute time saving exercise workouts.

The SBD, by Dr. Agatston, a cardiologist, was created as a way to help patients to naturally lower their cholesterol.  Patients also lost weight and loved the diet.

What you might love abut this diet are the abundance of delicious recipes and an effective and efficient short workout to help remove those stubborn pounds more easily and more quickly.

My inent is to have you look over my shoulder as I build my latest site.  My hope is that my input will be of benefit.

My website builder is Concrete 5, a free one click installation.  I have used about a dozen site builders, I find that Concrete gives total control and, for me. is easier.  According to customer ratings, however, Joomla, WP, and Droopal 7 are very slightly favored over Concrete.  One of  the non profits that I help has Live Site which is a nice site builder.  The free version is limited, but should work for most online businesses.  The Live Site is ready to go, you simply fill in the content and it is also a one click install.

My Forum Installation is SMF, a free one click option.  I have tried a few forum installations (such as PHPBB, MyBB, PunBB, Vanilla, WP, and BBPress) , I keep coming back to SMF, it seems to be the easiest to build and manage.  Vanilla is a very close second and probably has a better look, but for heavy duty use, I like SMF.

My Blog Installation is Nibbleblog, a free one click option..  Nibbleblog is the simplest blog I have ever seen, I love it.  No constant updates, just blogging.   WP is great, but all I do on my blog is blog, so the simplicity is just what I want.

I use Oxwall for my social site installation, a free one click option.  A nice look and feel, easy to build and manage with enough plugins to allow you to customize it to your needs.   I have tried Dolphin, Elgg, and Etano, I prefer Oxwall.

My Article Directory Installation is Article Setup, another free one click install.  Lightweight and basic for easier maintenance.  It is the only article directory that I have tried.

I use Wordpress for my membership site.  Membership is free so I keep it simple.  WP has an easy membership app.

I have not yet added a store (eCommerce).   I will add one and probably use CubeCart (15MB). This is actually light weight and works well.  Cube Cart is the #1 free open source eCommerce system.  This is also a free one click install.

softaculous App Installer

All these installs are available in one place on my cPanel under Softaculous Apps Installer.

My webhost is is based in Canada and is unlimited (thankfully), and provides these free one click installations and much much more in the Softaculous Apps Installer on the cPanel.

A short story about my webhost.

My first domain name renewal is approaching, so I checked to make sure that it is on automatic renewal and I am expecting to see about a $13.99 cost ($13.99 is about what my previous twice the price webhost charged).   My renewal is on automaric but the cost is zero.  Domains are really free for life with Hosthero.

You can use free resources for your blog, forum, social site, etc., using options such as Blogger, Wordpress, Joomla, Proboards, Altervista, etc.  My experience using free resources was and is that I am very happy with free blogs, and satisfied with Proboards (free forum) and quite satisfied with Social Site options such as Joomla.

On the other hand, your own paid webhosting is affordable and allows for your own domain name and optimal control over your sites.  You also have the option to experiment, trying more than one blog or store option, for example.
