Those of us in Multi-Level-Marketing (MLM) have been there! No one wants to just listen. We go to our family members and friends excited to tell about our new business and they go to work busting our bubble of joy. You know what I mean; “and you’re going to make money with that?”, “people don’t make money with those businesses”, “you need to be thinking about a real job”, “you are all going to jail; that’s a pyramid scheme”, and on and on and on! Well, we are not deterred! We are learners and to help with that here are a few tips I’ve learned to get them to listen to what we have to say.
Think about how you are yourself and you’ll find that most people are not much different. To get the communication going you want to encourage the person to talk about what’s most important to them. THEM! That’s right; you want to get the person talking about themselves. No one wants to be fast talked; they don’t want to hear a sales pitch. MLM is actually not about sales at all. We are problem solvers. We want to delve into what the person needs; more money to pay medical bills, child going off to college soon, huge mortgage payment coming up, wedding plans for self or child; this is what we are looking for in our communication with our family, friends or others we meet. That is the real job.
Lovers of MLM are excited about this business model. Many are of the frame of mind that they are unemployable and thrilled to work for themselves. So knowing this why would you that it ok for you to tell any other person how they must join your business because you know it will be perfect for them. First, who wants to be pressured and secondly, adults are past being told what they must do; it can totally turn your prospect off from talking to you at all.
So what do you do, how do you get to build a relationship, create an understanding and connection with your prospective associate? Remember when I said before what was important to the person you are trying to reach was them. Well, that still holds let them talk about their job, their life, their hobbies, their family and anything about them you can bring up in the conversations. The more questions you can ask about their lifestyle the better acquainted you become with how you can solve their problems. That’s what we are all about!
Do this and then you can turn it around to where you’ve been such a great listener they become interested in you. You now have them curious as to what you do, your family, and your hobbies. You now have an opening to tell them about your business and how it could maybe help them.
We are always very excited about our businesses and that’s ok, but you have to know when to stop talking. So few of us ever really get someone to listen to us, so when you come along ready to listen and empathize with them; at the very least you have just made a friend. A friend can be a possible associate or can offer referrals of great people to meet. Now that’s real excitement!!
