From Business Cards To AVON Products To...


     I've been in a wheelchair since I had polio in 1955, which left me unable to walk, or have much strength in my arms, and only about a third of lung capacity. Although unable to work at a regular 9 to 5 job, I definitely didn't want to sit around all day watching TV.

    Back in the 70's, home computers only existed in science fiction stories, but there were magazines like Specialty Salesman and Money Making Opportunities which I subscribed to. Selling vacuum cleaners or similar products door to door wasn't something I'd be suited for, but I saw that I could be an affiliate of custom printed products and earn commissions on my sales.

    Business cards and Wedding invitations were what I first sold. As best that I could, mostly through word of mouth, I connected with people who needed wedding invitations printed and took their orders. And, also through word of mouth, and by handing out my own business cards, I got got orders for those as well.

     My own business cards were on yellow card stock, and I encouraged my prospects to have cards that were something other than plan white. Back then people were apt to have many cards that had been given to them, and those cards might be stuffed into their wallets, or on a table or in a drawer at home. Have a card that was yellow, green, blue, pink or any other color would make it stand out from the crowd and much easier to locate when a prospect wanted to find it so as to get the contact information that was on the card.

    Then one day I was talking on the phone with an AVON representative about her ordering some distinctive business cards to hand out to her customers and prospective customers. She told me that AVON now also had products for men, including the kind of gadgets sold at Brookstone stores.

     That got me to thinking. Most of the handful of businesses near where I lived were not wheelchair accessible, so I couldn't get inside to show them my business printing catalogs. And leaving a business card outside their store or office building wouldn't do any good because it would just be blown away in the wind.

     I lived in a residential part of town, and although I wouldn't be able to knock on doors or ring doorbells to sell AVON, I could leave catalogs on their doorsteps. And so that is what I did. I placed each catalog in one of their plastic bags intended for door hanging, and went around in my power wheelchair leaving them on the doorsteps of homes first in my own neighborhood, and then in other neighborhoods. I'd get over a hundred catalogs every 2 weeks and leave them on doorsteps.

     If a household didn't place an order after a few times of leaving a catalog, I skipped that house and started leaving a catalog at some other house. Little by little I had new customers all over the area.

    Most other representatives placed their orders once every two weeks. I started placing orders nearly every week, and in so doing was able to fill the orders for my customers more quickly. If somebody didn't like what they got, I gladly took it back and refunded their money. As you might expect, I developed quite a few very happy and loyal customers.

    But then, in 2012, cancer, a heart attack, and further weakening of my breathing brought an end to my being an AVON representative. I spend 2 and half months in the hospital, and simply was not able to get back to it afterwards.

    Thankfully by then, home computers were the norm, and the Internet made it possible to run a business venture entirely online from home. Rather than focus on consumer products, I decided to return to selling things that businesses needed. And that is what I've been doing ever since.

    The most recent thing that I am making available to businesses is custom designed interactive email signatures. Almost every business sends out emails of one kind or another, and these signatures can be set up to be included in every email they send out.
